Mandarine Goby

1) I added 100 lbs of Live rock to my tank when i started it, do you think i need to buy the "starter pod kit" or can i just add more live rock and they will take off after a few weeks?

2)Also, alot of people say they "grow" their pods in their refugium....Arent most refugiums lit up? Thanks.

Pods grow well in refugiums not due to light but due to lack of predation. No fish to eat them so they reproduce in relative safety.

You may have a population of pods already. To see, wait till a couple hours after the tank lights go out. Hold a flashlight up against the tank wall near the rocks for about 10 minutes, the pods will collect like any other bug at the light. If you seen none (and they are small) you could probalby use a starter bottle to get you going.

A couple weeks is normally all the pods need for a population boom

So then i can just add them to the tank since its a Fowlr tank....Right? Then in a month or two add a Mandarine goby?

I will look for the copapods tonight as well.

Turn off powerheads and add at night so your fish don't eat em up right away.
LR rubble pod piles are great, but I would consider maybe a HO fuge.
I have a 90 with 150lbs of LR and pod piles.
My mandarin and red headed goby ate like pigs and made it difficult to keep pods a plenty.
I had to get rid of the red head.
Bought 4 bottles of pods ($100) to restock along with adding a HO fuge.
Adding phytoplankton also helps.

Randall James says that NO FISH eat them. Do fish eat them or just some fish eat them.

Anybody have any more suggestions as to where to get them cheap? thanks

What he meant was that no fish can eat what's in the fuge, and that's why they are able to multiply in the fuge.
I started to pour in my first bottle of pods while lights are on and noticed my fish getting all excited.
That's when I stopped and thought about waiting until dark, and decided to turn off pumps too.
At $100 per 4 bottles, I want as many to survive as possible.
I also got rid of my redhead goby as it was starting to look pregnant, too much competition for my mandarin.
