Mandarins

Is it common for Mandarins to jump? I have covered 55gal, I did some tank maintenance last yesterday, forgot to put the covers on and found both my Mandarins on the floor this morning....dead. Very bummed out today

Two Clowns, A flasher wrasse, and shrimp goby.
I have had freshwater tanks my whole life. We are about a year and half into the saltwater hobby and these are the first 2 fish I have ever had jump out

I had a mandarin jump out during tank maintenance as well and didn't notice until it was too late. Some it seems are more skittish than others and will jump if startled while the one I have now that replaced the jumper I am pretty sure doesn't know I exist. I can be mounting new frags or doing a water change and get the hose right next to him and it doesn't impede his pod hunting or make him swim away at all. I had a firefish that jumped out the small gap in the back of my tank I used to have while I had a glass top. After I found the firefish on the floor all dried up I decided it was definitely time for a screen top and am very happy with the looks and security it has added.

Any fish can jump on any day. IMO, people who don't have covers on there tanks have some cahones. Haven't you seen finding nemo, these fish are trying to get back to the ocean.

Yeah, i think just about anything may jump. Always better safe than sorry. A friend of mine had their cleaner shrimp jump, how crazy is that? Sorry for your loss

This was a painful lesson ( for them and me). As difficult as Mandarins can be to keep, I was lucky, these two were very eating R.O.E as well as pods.
Thanks for the input (and condolences) everyone.

That's a darn shame and I'm sorry to hear it.

I've had a mandarin carpet-surf too, plus a peppermint shrimp and tiger pistol. I've always wondered if one of the cats torments them at night.
