Just so everyone knows Mandarin's eat Roe (fish eggs) and they love it. So if you want to get your Mandarin fat... they eat it like popcorn!

well I just buy it at a chinese food supermarket. In Canada it's called T&T. Please excuse my ignorance for not knowing if they have that chain in the USA! But if not where ever you can buy chinese food to make at home. The only two types they had were seasoned and unseasoned... I went with unseasoned. The lady I bought it from said I had a very lucky fish 'cause it's such a delacacy and doesn't even buy it for herself. It's like $3xx Canadian for a few human mouthfuls but it will last your fish alot longer than that. That's why it's usually just on top of susi. I spread it on the rocks and everything including mandarin dragonet love it. They love it, but a little goes a long way! ~Carrie

Yes it works, and works good, my mandarin is fat lol fish eggs are hardy. I got this info when I was doing research online. It's just something that most people dont know about becasue no one told them, or they never thought of trying it. Your LFS probably doesn't even know.

It is Flying fish roe. It is under the name Tobiko or Masagi. You need to find some with no seasoning in it. Otherwise it will have salt and soy sauce in it. Here in Hawaii it is easy to get. Not sure about other states.

In my 150 would I have to spot feed the mandrin or just plop the eggs in and let them blow around?

Ummm... good question, I really dont know. My Mandrin is pretty good at finding them. He really only eats about 8 eggs before he's full. He got fat quick when I started feeding him the roe. I would guess if you have other fish in the tank they might get it before him. I just make shure I put them in near his location. But they do tend to hide if you stick anything in the tank, besides food. Try both and post your findings...

did you use flying fish roe or crab roe?

$300?! no way. it's not caviar! I bought a small box for $10.

Keep it in the freezer. I put mine in the fridge..and oh boy...smelt of rotten eggs with the lid closed.

The link that tonyh67 gave looks just like what I found at my local chinese supermarket. If there is one in your area they should have it. I found a thread a while back and people were using this to target feed corals. I have fed it to many fish, damsels, tangs, angels, etc, they all ate it, not as eagerly as brine shrimp or cyclop-eeze tho. Oh the corals ate it also. I put some extra in the tank with mandarins and scooters but I didn't have time to watch them and see if they ate it. Also as mentioned keep it in the fridge or even freezer.
