So woke up and found my Mandrin Goby dead on the floor, must have jumped out last night.

Backgroud: Went from 90 gallon reef to a 180 and the 90 gallon had a hood. The 180 is built onto the wall in the basment and is open top...

Do I need to put a screen on it... really did not want to do that since ever day I have my hands in there playing arround didnt want that extra work of taking off a screen and putting it back on every time but if I have to I have to.... Thoughts?

I currently have :
Yellow tang
Hippo Tang (Large)
(2) Clown fish
Mandrin Goby
Coral Beaty
Flame Angle (Coral and Flame do get along also which I was lucky)
Few Blue Cromis for schooling
Sand Sifting goby
Fire Goby

- the Mandrin Goby Now... Was it just a fluke? I moved the tank from 90 to 180 2 weeks ago and water parameters are still excelent...

I didn’t mean hands literally, Feeding, Spot Feeding Corals, Scraping glass, helping a fallen snail... i am working on my tank daily is what i meant...

I think all fish will jump, but some of the ones on your list are more prone than others; the gobies for sure and the clowns. In my opinion, all tanks should be covered.

I have two perc clowns and when I take the screen top off one will actively jump out of the water into the air. He doesnt seem to care if I am right there and I have to put my hand over the tank because I am afraid of him jumping out.

So yea I would never think about going without a cover.

just get a screen kit from BRS, they are easy to assemble, and are very easy to just take off before you start working, then put it back on when your done. its not a big deal.

Putting a screen top on is up to you, but like others said any fish is capable of jumping, some more than others. I have lost clowns, chromi and a firefish to jumping (this was with the screen top on, but they all seemed to find the one small spot that wasn't covered.)

Ok sold! will be ordering a screen today for the tank... it was heart breaking to find him on the ground this morning, ruined my day...

Thanks for the feedback guys...
