mandy help

Sea Turtles Love Me......
I was getting dogfood my my petstore and they had a spotted mandrin sp and I have been wanting one but I was gonna wait a lil longer. The problem is this thing was in a 3 g tank and he was starving very emaciated and thin and with my bleeding heart gf was yelling at me to save it I did. He scooted around a lil bit but he is just sitting there and not going after pods, I know he is new and stressed but is there anything I can do to help him. Another lfs sells pods I was going to try to spot him tomorrow.

not to be rude but, I don't understand why people spend there money on dying critters at there LFS in an attempt to "rescue" it. the best reaction would be to inform them of what there doing wrong, and not purchase anything from that store and maybe they'll get the idea and treat there stock better or go out of business.

it would be like going to go get a new kitten or dog and picking the sickliest one out of pity.

as for what could be wrong with it :
theres a good possibility it didn't recover well from being wild-caught or was improperly acclimated and suffered some brain damage.

if it's not eating or cruising around at all i think your at/near the point of death

Mine takes frozen blood worms, It might be worth a shot. Hopefully your fish is just a little spooked with the new environment and will get down to business soon. Your going to need a populated fuge to support a Mandarin, In the mean time buying bottled pods will be very expensive.
As with any sickly looking emaciated fish there's a good chance that your fighting a loosing battle.
Good luck

Ultimately here we are. No sense of arguing particulars. The best thing you can do at this point is to try to give it as stress free of an atmosphere as you can. Adding more food won't do anything if it is too stressed to look for food or too stressed to eat. See what he/she is doing tomorrow. Maybe a good night in the dark will help, but be prepared for the possibility.

ur not being rude ur right and I had a disscussion with the owner about it who was unaware (I hope) I have a ton of pods in my tank and was only thinking of bottled pods for an attempt at spot feeding. Also he was given to me for 75% off and staying there was certian death at leastnow it has a chance and if he pulls through he was only stock list anyways so we both win I was only a month away from getting one anyways so if I am dumb for trying to give an animal a chance then so be it.

If you see a mandarin that is either (1) skinny or (2) not actively hunting for food, the game is over and you should not waste your money. I know this is too late for you, and I can understand your desire to "svae" the fish, but I can almost guaranty you that you will be holding a funeral in the near future.

Yeah I agree with above that you're probably fighting a losing battle. It stinks when you see a fish in declining health at the LFS. One thing you have to consider is that you don't necessarily know what's going on with that fish. As far as if it just hasn't been fed enough, or if there is something larger going on. So by adding it, despite your best intentions, you're actually taking a gamble with your current healthy livestock by adding a stressed, possibly disease stricken fish to your display tank.

Although I'm fairly certain Mandarins are pretty hardy, disease resistant fish... it's just one of those things that the risk may not be worth the reward.

Good luck though. I hope it pulls through, they are beautiful little fish. :(

When they're too far gone, their appetite shuts down. If it won't react to pods in the vicinity, it's bad news. This is the point at which a hospital would put a human on IV and get the blood chemistry sorted out, but you have no such option. I'd be surprised if it survived.

I've noticed the same thing... once they're well emaciated, they usually don't recover. Good luck, all the same.

I need to up date my profile tank is at about 7 1/2 month and i see pods on every rock ect so my tank should be able to handle one.

Yes it is not looking good for him, I do get VacavilleFC3S's point and i do agree but for $5 and my gf asking me to try and myself feeling bad for it whatever I tryed I have spent five bucks in much dumbber ways like strippers and beer!

So if all he does it die at least its in a place where he had a chance even if it is a slim one

I agree with you, as long as it doesn't affect your other fish, for $5 bucks I think you did the right thing, maybe not the smartest thing. Hope he makes it.
