Mantis and open top?

I thought I answered this yesterday, but one more time - it depends on the species and the size of the animal. A small odontodactylid can easily jump three or four inches and I've seen them clear at least six. Most gonodactylids can only jump a couple of inches. P. ciliata are good jumpers if spooked.

A few species will also crawl out of the water. G. smithii often can be found crawling between tidepools and I have had them climb out of tanks or over partitions.

My Smithii is definitely a climber..not too much jumping though, but if he can crawl anywhere near it he will. he was in my refugium and when i looked a day later he was somehow inbetween the sump baffles.

my peacock got spooked yesterday while i was cleaning the tank and she was close to jumping out, now she is in a deeper tank so im not as worried but the threat is always there
