Mantis ID and questions

I just got a mantis after a year of waiting, the lfs lady gave it to me for free. :D
I'm guessing it's a wennerae, although that's just by color and size, so I could definately be wrong.

Once it comes out of hiding, how should I train it to eat from a skewer?

OMG! Is that a parasitic snail on the underside of the telson?

Not sure of the species, the coloring is consistent with several species, and we can't see the meral spots from the pictures sent. It is not N. wennerae -- the telson is the wrong shape. I don't think it is G. chiragra, even though the colors look about right -- looks too "dainty".

The missing raptorial appendage will grow back in a few molts.

Hmm, yeah now I remember about the snail thing, how serious is it and what can I do about it?

Where are the meral spots? I thought they were on the tail (obviously haven't been on this forum in awhile lol)

Will the appendage cause any feeding issues?

lol, Yeah I was hoping that wouldn't be what I have to do. Anyone have shrimp sedatives? lol.
It's already tunneled a hole through one of the rocks, although it's still pretty shy.

If the snail continues to live there the mantis will not be able to molt and will die (assuming it is a snail)

Anyone have a link to what Dr. Roy said about it?

Dan

If you are going to pull it off, you will need a good proctologist. The only thing I see on the ventral telson is the animal's anus.

He seems like he's getting used to me pretty fast, I was looking for him where I though his burrow was earlier, but out of the corner of my eye I saw him watching me from the other side of the tank. He did the same thing just aminute ago, I had a piece of shrimp on a skewer and I was waving it where I had seen him earlier, until I noticed him watching me from anotehr spot, probably wondering what the heck the shaky hunk of white was. I started waving it in front of him over there, and to my suprise he kinda nudged it, looked at it, then pulled it off the skewer and into wherever he was hiding. I didn't expect getting him to eat frozen food would be this easy!

I haven't seen him since the last post, so it's been about 1 1/2 weeks. Is this a bad sign? I'll try waving a shrimp chunk around again tonight, just to see if he'll come of of hiding. Maybe he's molting?

you only got him recently so he may just be hiding and doing home renovations. or he may be molting, either or. Just dont go poking around in the rockwork trying to flush him out... he'll come out looking for food when he gets hungry. 1 1/2 weeks is not a long enough time to warrant any worry... they can go a very long time without food and if the mantis is small enough it will probably feed itself with amphipods. you can try waving the frozen shrimp around the rock if you want though.

Are you sure this was a male. The photo looks to me like a female with some reproductive development. If so, she could have laid eggs and be hold up with them.

It's about 2 1/2 inches. I finally saw it come out last night, it crawled out and then curled up on it's back against the rock and watched me, it was kinda funny. I watched it eat an amphipod too, so it is feeding itself. I don't think it's got any eggs.
I saw it again this afternoon, kinda startled me since I was looking at the tank and all the sudden it shot out from between the rocks and kinda glided down to the bottom before going back into hiding. I still haven't been able to get a good enough shot of it to make an id.

I saw it again yesterday, and was able to get some good pics of it when I fed it. Hopefully they're good enough for an id.

I noticed that it's got very strange behaviors, it doesn't walk around upright, but kinda scoots around curled upside down. Someone told me it's ossible that it molted, and had issues which have caused it to have some kinda nonconformity that impairs it. They said I should feed it as much as it will eat, does this seem like it could be the case?

Okay it's definatel not acting like it's doing well, infact if I had to guess I would say just based ont eh way he's acting that he won't be ok tomorrow. All of the sudden his legs are curled backwards and he's laying upside down, occasionally having seizures. I also noticed some stringy stuff hanging off it's head, and it wouldn't eat when I gave it a piece of shrimp. I nudged it a tad with a piece of rigid airline and it didn't seem to respond very well. :( I hope he pulls through...
