Mantis ID

Hey guys and gals. I guy near here says he has a mntis for sale. He says it looks kinda like a peacock and it is about 3.5" He said it looks just like this one:

And that it is called a clown mantis. Is there a mantis know as that, and is that what is pictured?

Ima guess smithii on the one in the link... Not sure though.

No there is no clown mantis, these are just marketing names.

The one pictured is a G smithii im 99% sure. What you will get is probably not a G smithii.

If you could get a picture we could probably do a better job of IDing it for ya. the thing is that most people dont know how to ID mantis shrimp by species or even how to describe them... no fault to them, but it certainly doesnt make a buyers life easy as you dont know if youll get a peacock that will attain a foot in legth or a G. smithii who stays within four inches.

The animal in the photograph is in the Gonodactylus smithii complex. This group needs to be worked over. Currently there are two species in the complex, but I'm sure that the species found in Guam is different and the beast with red intersegmental lines (like this one) may be a different species. Eventually molecular data will hopefully sort this out.

A peacock that will obtain a foot in length? Maximum size for O. scyllarus is 6.5 inches!

When O. scyllarus first became commercially available (from Okinawa and and Sri Lanka) in the late 60's, they were sold as Clown or Harlequin Mantis Shrimp. The descriptor "Peacock" became more commonly used in the 80's. Old timers like me often still call them "clowns". That term has not to my knowledge been applied to any other stomatopod.

thats what my smithii looks like. doesnt have that neon green color like the ones on roys id list.

but can you really put a price on the happiness of a stomotopod?

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I really hope he has a smithii! I am trying to get a pic so I don't have to drive to go figure out what it is. Oh, and sorry for the horrible typing in my first post!!!

I know one is a peacock and I think one is a platysoma. The yellow looks like a squilla. I am stumped with the others!

All yellow on bottom is P.ciliata
Just above that is G.chiagra
Pure guess but the next one up may also be G. chiagra.
then Gonodactylus platysoma
with a peacock on top.
