i really wanted to put an octopus in my new nano cube...but according almost everyone on this site im an idiot for thinking that....and since i want something badass...i figure ill go with a mantis shrimp....but the lfs convinced my mom that they will break my glass and escape and now she is totally against me getting the mantis....so i need some information on mantis shrimp that will put her mind off of the fact its a killer and more that its an interesting creature to have in the tank....the tank and everything in it is a week old...do i have to wait for a cycle to add the mantis? or can i add it right away....and does anyone in the chicago land area have one they want to get rid of? cause i have no clue where to get one

Your LFS is propogating an embellished, sensationalized notion. Only the largest of the clubbers (like a O Scylarrus-Peaock; or maybe a ternatensis, something over 5-6 inches) have been able to Crack glass. This RARE event occurs when they may be digging in the sand for a burrown and reaches the bottom of the tank, with repeated focused strikes, it may be possible to cause a crack. There are many ways to prevent this: Buy an acrylic tank, get a smaller mantis under 4 inches; get a spearer mantis with no Clubs, put a layer of acyrlic on the bottom of the tank before your insert your sand; or if you go with glass, make sure the glass is over 7 mm thick. Any one of these should suffice, in your case with a 12 gal Glass nano, either go with a small to medium sized mantis or spearer, or lay down the acrylic bottom.

im just going with a medium sized mantis...im trying to see if anyone that lives in the chicago land area is getting rid of a hitchhiker or something like that....so far i have no luck....would a medium sized mantis beable to take on a emrald crab the same size as it?

oh yeah i know...i figure that if i get a small mantis though maybe he wont kill the emrald right away....i want to see how they live together

Yes, my mom and I both have nano cubes. They are made by JBJ correct? Comes with the built-in filtration in the back along with a halfway decent PC lighting setup, ya they are acrylic.

unless there are two versions of the nanocube out there, they are definately glass. im nearly positive that all of them are glass, i know mine is;)

there are more opptions than a peacock, a smithii, wennerae, or a small spearer will make great shrimp. there is a grater chance of you getting hit buy a car than a msall matis beaking the glass.

Hey, that's not very funny to those of us that have been hit by cars... insensitive bast*ard! ;)

Just kidding. But really, it hurt.

Look at box.

"Curved Glass"

At least here in Japan curved glass in much more common than curved acrylic.

im not giving away my smithii. try tampabaysaltwater.com they have wenneraes in stock all the time. (these wont break you tank.

it has taken a couple months, but the lil mantid's from TBS, become outgoing if you interact with them enough!

well my lfs are seeing if they could get a hold of a mantis for me...i requested a wennerae cause i know they wont break the glass...and i told them not to get it for me if it doesnt have good color....what color is your wennerae?
