Mantis, Jigsaw Lovers?

I was watching Clunk patch up the holes in home today and noticed he placed the coral pieces to fill/fit in respective grooves already there. It was like watching a jigsaw being finished.

Could this be a sign of mantis intelligence with problem solving?

Hehe...sounds like a Thesis paper is in order.

Sounds more like an instinctual thing. What someone could do is take a few juvenile mantis and keep track of how well they build and see if they get better at it as time goes by.....

...and introduce them to beer and see if they form a Fraternity and swim around in circles minus their exoskeletons screaming "Woooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooo!!!":D

I've done some work on this over the years using primarily N. bredini. They select the correct size of rock or shell, but don't seem to be able to pick the right shape. I had dreams of doing square peg in round hole observations, but they seen only to get the peg in hole part. The best shape and fit seems to be trial and error, but at least they are smart enough to give up and try another piece if one does not stick.

i know exactly what you are talking about, my former G. Smithii (R.I.P) would sit in his hole and pound on a small rock, then he'd set it at the entrance, stare at it for a moment, hit it again and rotate it.

and he'd keep doing that for about half an hour
