Mantis/pistol shrimp in Central CA tidepools?

Hi all!

I love winter! It's the best time to tidepool in CA because the lowest levels are mostly in daytime... And with such warm weather as we're having...

So, today I brought a thermometer with me to the tidepools...and the water was ~71 degrees from the sun heating it up.

The question is: When I was knee deep (with shoes on) in the middle of a pool, I suddenly heard LOUD popping sounds coming from the water below me. Sounded suspiciously like my two mantis shrimp.

I only know of the one mantis shrimp that's in southern CA and that lives quite deep in the water. What could have been making those noises???

they are pistol shrimp! i'm more south than you are, but once i went to the tidepool and heard popping (while i was in the water) and thought "TIME TO GET OUT!!!" and i did! :D but then i noticed, that it was more of a popping noise, rather than the mantis shrimp's click!

So i listened for the sound and looked under a few rocks (remember to put them back! :)) and reached in the muddy water and picked up a small pistol shrimp!

HOWEVER, do this at YOUR OWN RISK!! don't blame me if i'm wrong about your area and you have Hemisquilla Californiensis under your rocks!
