Mantis Shrimp in San Francisco...

This is for locals,as this shop doesn't ship out, unfortunately.

6th Avenue Aquarium has four mantis shrimp currently.

A Peacock (O. scyllarus), about 3", priced at around 30 bucks.

2 G. chiraga, 2.5" or so, priced at 20 bucks or so.

And...

A L. maculata (Marked as Zebra mantis), at 40 bucks. It is about 8" or so, so it must be a younger one. From the length of the dactly-spears, it looks like a male, but I am not sure.

I am not sure on the sex of any of them, and this is the first time that I have seen a L. macluata. It was gorgeous.

It was hard to not decide to start up ANOTHER tank for the L. maculata. None of mine are the right dimensions, though, being longs in design. This gorgeous critter deserves a properly set-up home.

Thats a fantastic price Ron. I paid $80 without shipping for Hera and she isn't much bigger.

You might also want to take another look at Dr. Caldwell's thread on how he keeps his L. maculata. They place a piece of glass about 5" from the front of the glass, and slowly fill that with sand for the mantis to burrow in. Haplocena told me on the Grimreefers.com thread that they do that to keep them burrowing in one plane because if they go off they can have their burrow colaps. The 100 gal tank is just to have extra water for quality control. Since I only have the one and, she is smaller than either of his in his pair, I went with a 55.

Surely you have a 55...

I know
its like enabling a crack head.

Damn you enablers!!!

I have 3 Eclipse 6s, 2 hex 5s, 3 Eclipse 12s, a Nanocube 12, a 30, a 46,
a 2 gallon (Soon to be a ghost shrimp holding tank), a 2galon guppy tank...

AND (Unfilled)

An 80, a 75, a 55 (All long), 2 more 30, a 29 glass, a 5 minibow, and a Partridge-in-a-Pear tree (Would that be transposed to a Achilles-Tang-in-a-Montipora???).

My problem is space (I'll have to have you guys over some day, and vice versa to visit your mantis set-ups.

Apartment in SF, no wall space for these tanks (Not to mention the PG&E bill, now tha I have a MH tank...ugh@ inheriting my friend's stuff).

Ach...
