Mantis Shrip VS Clam need answer quick

Hope someone has an answer for me. Today I came home with a tear drop calm and it is sitting on an old clam shell to keep it from diging itself into the sand. I have had a mantis shrip in my tank for a few years now( not by choice), the mantis is now picking at the dead clam shell and is making his home underneath the new clam. can or will he in time eat the clam from the foot up?:(

Moved here from the Clams forum since the answer to this question is really about what Mantis Shrimp will/will not eat/do. I thought you might get the best and quickest answer here.

I assume the stomatopod is in the 2-3 inch range and a small gonodactylid smasher. If so, it is not likely to cause much trouble. I have seen large (5-6 inch) O. scyllarus go after clams as will really large gonodactylids (4 inch). Even then, generally the attacks were superficial. I wouldn't worry about it.

The mantis has made a home underneath the clam around the open area ( foot).if I understand you correct, it will not eat the foot and work it's way into the clam

I would suggest now that you know where the mantis lives, to place one end of a hose with a diameter large enough for mantis to fit trough, by the entrance of where the mantis is living and keep the other end outside of the tank with a bucket, when you see the mantis next to the end of the hose, just suck on it as hard as you can till it starts to siphon, you should be able to suck the mantis right out of the tank

get it out just to be safe here is one methd you can use

Mantis Shrimp Trap
another way is to find the rock it lives in take the rock out and hold it over a bucket squirt fresh water or seltzer water in th hole he is in, it should fly right out.

If you catch it can i have it???

sure you can have it if I ever catch it. he is a slippery little devil the second his rock moves he flies out of it.
