mantis tank?

There are a plenty of mantis shrimp great for that size. Wenerrae is the most popular from Florida. Also easy to take care of and interactive.
I would try to avoid a G. Chiragra is\f you can. They are very aggressive and strike extremely hard. But the main reason is that they are known to be reclusive. There will always be exceptions to the rule but for the most part they are more private and you may not see it often.

They are also in most cases very dark in color and pretty much almost doesn't exist in the tank. I seen one colorful chiragra before but it was nothing to compare with the other stomatopods.

You can change the color of a G. Virdis or N wennerae, they change color based on lighting and enviroment whenever they molt. P. Ciliata does the same.

ok thanks!
oh i see where it says tank size now
lol.
Is bluezoo or fishplace a good source for mantis?

G.chiragra I would consider a good candidate for colors I've seen dark ones, orange ones, red ones, mine is like a light grey with pink 'legs' and other parts.

Megatron

I also would say that it's a great species although mine certainly doesn't seem to threatened by me (I have never seen mine 'threaten' me in the classic Stomatopod pose). However I do see it daily, even though it's compartment is effectively filled with Live Rock & Macro Algae.

To add more thought, mine certainly makes for an entertaining visual display come time of feeding! I can't wait to give the brute a nice DIY PVC burrow once the HOB overflow comes.

Thats the exact same colors I seen that I'm referring to. Pretty coloration.

Smithii, and wennerae you are going to have to special order at the lfs, Bluezoo rarely gets mantis instock.. I just seen them get in a peacock last week... and then last time before that was 6 months plus they don't sell wennerae. The other place mentioned doesn't sell either.

Just remember 2 things....

#1- A large G.chiragra can damage glass.
#2- A small aquarium uses thinner glass.

:)

oh.
in that case
im sticking with a smithiii=P

About 50% of mantis lfs get instock are mainly from hitchhiking rather than actual collecting.. ones they do get instock are usually peacocks and zebras and they will miss identify G. Ternatensis as peacocks quite often. Both G. ternatensis I got where labeled as peacocks... even when I ordered a peacock from liveaquaria they sent me a G. teratensis.

As kharn said, Whatever you can find instock easier.
