Mantis to good home

I live in South Jersey and have a newly caught mantis. 2inches brownish red, maybe a wennerae. Local stores don't want him and I can't bear to kill him so i thought I'd give this a shot.

PM me

I guess,
I would need guidance and an understanding that if things went wrong my expenses are covered. I don't want to make any money. I wish I could keep it myself, but my tank paradigm won't let me. I'd do the best I can.

Let me know,
bob

Yes, He's happy in his little container within the tank. Check that, i just took his picture and he stopped and looked up at me. I think he's ****ed. He's way cool though

PM "Gonodactylus" or "DJTimmy" for an ID.
If its a wennerea then that illuminous blue is rare.
There is a teeny tiny Gonodactylus that is known for this blue and is quite rare.

Then why dont you?
You could always just put him in a sump if you have one, if not set a small nano up for him. Less than 10 gallons would be fine, even one of those USA 6 gallon tanks.
Really interesting to keep. Just toss him a crab and im sure you will want to!
Also, he will have a spot on the inside of his appendages...try to get a look what colour these are.

Intrigued,

My sump is an Oceanic 29 gallon AQ that has a central section for bioballs (which is empty) and then a passage to return which I keep my heater, a phosban reactor and a bag of charcoal before it goes back into the tank.

Is it worth to him to keep him in such?

I'm not a bleeding heart and am in fact a killer (of sorts) But this Mantis is charming.

I would really like to know opinions. (with regards to mantis, of course)

If you throw a pvc pipe or a load of rubble in the larger empty section he would most certainly make a home right there and love you for it. I presume it is lit also? If not just buy a T8 tube/unit for him as they dont actually require any light.
Also when you find nasty hitchiking crabs you have someone other than the toilet that will appreciate them now!!
i really hope you keep him.

Apologies for any hopes dashed but I'm taking Trapped Metal's advice and keeping him.

I built a wonderful little structure (If I may be so immodest) out of Lexan that hangs from the side of the tank. It's 7" x 5" x 5'. I drilled holes in the sides for flowthrough. I put about an inch of live sand in the bottom and gave him a nice pretty rock which in an immediate flurry, he built himself (I'll say he's a he until I learn otherwise or how to tell myself) a burrow and now sits looking out.

I'm concerned that he may not have enough room to thrive but a squatter's hovel he's got. Tomorrow he gets lunch.

I have 2 mantis shrimp in my 55 gal reef. One is a 4" smithii and the other is a 3" wannarae. They are model citizens. I would just let it loose in with the corals. They are not as blood thirsty as people make you believe.

Would love to see a pic

So how is he feeding? That is fun to watch. I am glad that he has made his happy little home and that you decided to keep him. These guys are great pets!

I've given him a little chunk of shrimp each day. He cautiously comes out, grabs it and ducks home.

It's really neat to watch him watching you. I mean, with his stalked eyes you can clearly see him following your movements.

I used to keep Oscars which were so much fun because of their personality. This guy's better

hi dude glad to hear he is doing well.
Shrimp is good however please dont forget to mix up his diet a bit, hard shelled stuff are very important as to keep his raptorial appendages (smashers) in tact. Try throwing a crab in there...lots more fun. He may also take a small snail.
edit to say i think he is definatly a n wenerrea
