Joe's been keeping and breeding fish of all kinds since the age of 5 years old. He's a full time emergency room registered nurse and has a small aquarium service business. Joe's most recent breeding projects include clownfish, Banggai cardinalfish, pajama cardinalfish, orchid dottybacks, various dragonets, and a few different watchman gobies. His goal is to win a Species First award with the Marine Breeding Initiative and be a pioneer for our hobby as a force for conservation instead of depletion of our world's oceans so that my children can enjoy and learn from this hobby as I have.
Marine Fish Breeding 101
My goal is to provide a basic level of understanding to the group about marine fish breeding on a hobbyist level. While still in its infancy at the hobby level, its been repeatedly shown that some of the most significant achievements in the reproduction of marine ornamentals have occurred in apartments, garages and greenhouses. I want to educate the club members about the importance of the Marine Breeding Initiative and other programs like it and provide them with enough basic knowledge to go out and practice some of these techniques at home with species that they may already have reproducing in their reef tanks.
There are many misconceptions surrounding marine fish breeding. I'll go a little beyond the common rotifer and its place in this hobby and show everyone that, while very challenging, breeding marine ornamentals is not out of the reach of the dedicated hobbyist and is an incredible way to gain a deeper appreciation for the creatures they keep.
