Marine Betta Fish

Has anyone ever owned a Marine Betta Fish? If so did you have it in a Reef setup and how did it do in there? I read that it will eat small fish and shrimp is that correct?

Currently have one in my 75 for the past 4 months. Awesome fish that is very hardy and totally ignores the 2 skunk cleaners I have.

I am currently trying to sell mine though because he is a fish that is never seen much. Cryptic is the term. I thought he/she would be more visible once in the tank for awhile, but no go. That to me is the only thing I would discourage anyone from buying one.

I have one as well. Beautiful fish for sure. Very cryptic however mine is becoming a bit more visible, not much though. It spends most of its time (99%) hidden in the rocks. I dont mind it being cryptic as much as I do supporting its diet. So far I can only get it to eat live ghost shrimp. Everything else in my tank eats pellets.

I have it with a skunk cleaner shrimp and a blood red shrimp, has not bothered either. However, I did add about 10 peppermints a couple weeks ago to battle aiptasia and havent seen them since!

Not really trying to get rid of it however if I had to do it over again I probably wouldn't buy it again.

Regards to eating I was lucky as it was eating pellet before I bought it. Eats all frozen offered. But I agree I would not have bought it if I had my time back. Trying to sell it has been difficult- paid $120.00 selling for $90.00. Don't even go there concerning price lol.

Thanks guys that has helped me out tremendously. Will not be getting one of those. I have a ton of Peps in my tank to controll the aiptaisa as well and do not want them disappearing on me.

We have had ours 8 months, and we see him all of the time. Although he eats froze, he is a pain in the rear to feed, just watches food float by and then by the time he decided to eat it someone else has grabbed it. Don't get me wrong, he tied for my favorite fish in the tank (tied with the indigo hamlet), and he cleared out a major bristle worm infestation. I am fairly certain that he had tried to eat our very large coral banded shrimp, as a couple times he had a torn tail.... I would not try ours with any small shrimp. He is in with a small mandarin with no issue.

As far as them eating fish, it would have to be a very, very small fish to fit in their mouth, as they do not have the extending mouths like anglerfish.

I've had mine for about 4 years now, I certainly wouldn't write one off after 4 months, mine is pretty social. It eats NLS pellets and all frozen foods offered, I don't target feed it or anything. Mine has eaten peppermint shrimp, but never touched my cleaner shrimp. It is housed with a geometric Pygmy anthias (P. inermis) which is a fairly small fish, tiny gobies would probably be eaten but I wouldn't worry about most fish.
