Marineland DD thread.

How much do this DD tanks run for? specially the 150 and the 200? are the stands also from marineland and how much are they?

THX

My 300 with both overflow kits, glass tops and sales tax was $1800.00.

The Marineland stands are nice stands but overpriced. They are built well, but as others noted they are a tad short. They are only 29" tal and you have right around 25 1/2" of clearence inside the stand so going with their stand limits your skimmer options some, but you also get a lifetime warranty on the tank if you use their stand, for what thats worth.

Those prices are not that bad at all. I really like the dimensions, specially the 29" tall stand with a 27" tall tank I could almost reach the bottom without a ladder

I actually working on both my 150 & 300 DD tanks I love the size I did go with the regular size stand for the 150 too short and my 300 I went with a custom 39" stand ( So I will need the ladder) got my 300 at a steal under $1,500 to my front door brand new

Is this with Starphire glass on front? Thanks...

Some very nice setups on here guys! For what it is worth, Marineland makes the stands that height so that they will fit through the majority of interior doors in peoples homes. Any higher, and because of the 36"depth, you would not be able to turn it and get it in to your room.

Of course, if you build your own already in the room, this isn't an issue, but as mentioned above, it does drastically reduce the warranty from lifetime to 90 days, or a year I think...can't recall exactly, but significantly shorter.

Here is my 200 DD, setup last February.

Anyone who has the 250g (5 foot) version of this tank. How are you lighting this tank? Would 2, 250w MH in good reflectors do the job? I would like to stay away fromt he heat of the 400w ones. I like the 250w Radiums, but can't decide if I want to run them on a galaxy or drive them with bluewave HQI. I have seen good pictures of both setups

Thanks for any help

Joe

Thanks, guys. It has changed a little since those pictures were taken, but looks pretty close to that still.

Thought these would be helpful in this thread:

Things I would do differently if I was starting this setup over today:

1- I would have done BB for sure. The sheer height and depth of this tank makes cleaning the substrate extremely challenging. There are areas in the back that I cannot get to without removing the canopy, which requires 2 people.

2- I would not use the canopy at all. i would have gone with some type of hanging lights. It is just too cumbersome to remove, due to the size and all the wiring from the lights.

3- If I had gone with a BB, I could have done the flow differently. As it is, I don't have as much circulation near the bottom because it blows the substrate around.

Is anyone running one of these all in stand, i.e. no fishroom? I'm seriously jealous of you guys who own your own homes - I'm looking at one of these for my new tank but I'm going to be in appartments for the next few years.

I do have a fish room in the basement but the stand I built for my DD 250 is 36" tall so I have a 3'x3'x5' space under the tank. With that much room I'm thinking about adding a reef ready 75 gallon for an aggressive tank in the front of the stand and that will still leave plenty of room for other equipment.

If you build a reasonably tall stand you would have room for a large sump/skimmer/reactors and still have room left over.

(Necro posting but this seems like the best place)

Can any Marineland DD owners comment on their build quality? Silicone, etc.

How about the overflows. They don't look like they offer good flow.

What about the stand? Do they have doors on the side?

Anything else you want to say about these tanks would be appreciated :)

The build is pretty good on these tanks for the price. The silicone job is clean and the black is a nice touch. I have an issue with the silicone in my tank. It turned yellow along the bottom right corner of the tank. Fortunately the issue is along the bottom and can't be seen unless you really look for it. I contacted Marineland and they assured me that it would be OK. They told me to contact them if spread any further. Here is a picture but it is hard to see.

The overflows are restrict the type of flow most of us want on our reef tanks. I took out every other tooth on mine. Some others on here have taken out more. The big driving factor for me was due to the cross braces showing at the water surface. I had to throttle my return pump down to much. Once the teeth were widened it works fine now. I found the durso kit that came with tank to be to noise. There is a 1/2" hole drilled in one of the 90 elbows in the kit. I replaced it with a solid piece and drilled in my own hole on the top side of the fitting. I tapped in a quick connect fitting and ran a piece of hose about 6" long up and out of the overflow. I was able to trim the hose to get the proper amount of air restriction to allow for a balanced siphon to occur. Here is a picture that can help give you an idea of what I am referring to.

The Marineland stands do have side panels. I believe the slide to the rear of the stand. It will be fine to slide in a large sump. Once the tank is on the stand you cant slide the covers forward so they are locked in at that point.

Overall I am very pleased with my tank. I would buy another one if I had to.

The side panels still easily come out with the tank on the stand. The panels slide back so just don't put the stand right against the wall. Mine is 4 inches off the wall, I slide them back 4 inches then you push up and pull the bottom out and then the panel comes right out, works just like it was designed to.

Two issues I have with the Marineland Stand, one of which I knew going in and one I didn't. The first is the height, only about 25 3/4" of usable space underneath so this can limit your choice on skimmer. I knew this in advance so I was fine with it.

Second issue is the opening on the sides when you remove the panels is only 17 1/2". Doh WTH was Marineland thinking. They should have at least made it large enough to slide 18" wide tanks through. I didn't know that going in and it bothered me a little bit.

Silicone work seems fine. Little sloppy in places but its mainly in the top so only I even will know its there.

Overflows are fine for me. 700gph overflows x 2 = 1400 GPH. Almost 5 times turnover of tank water for filtering purposes works great. Matches perfect with my 1500gph ATB return pump. I use Vortechs for flow. Using your overflows and return pump to try to create flow in the display tank is just silly and a waste. And honestly more than 5 times turnover per hour into your sump is a waste to. Unless of course you like filtering filtered water. IMO of course ;)

Doh. This is baffling. 36 inches wide....big enough for a huge sump/refugium but only a 17.5" openning? I don't supposed you could take a picture or two of this?

I really don't want to make a custom stand. I don't trust myself.

Right now I am very frustrated with the market for tanks above 100g. You either have to suffer through poor quality stands, poor quality overflows or non-starphire glass or all of the above (Aqueon...).

The height of the stand was so it would fit through most interior doors. As for the side openings, this was an engineering decision. Being able to safely hold the weight of the tank dictated the size of the opening. The Marineland sumps were designed to fit through this opening, and any number of glass tanks will also fit.

Nova- don't forget that if you do not use a commercially made stand, you void the warranty on the tank. Also, you don't have to suffer through poor quality anything. Pay a couple grand and get a custom tank and furniture built to your specs. Realistically, if you have a Buick budget, you shouldn't expect Mercedes features and performance. If you have a Mercedes budget, buy a Mercedes.
