Maroon Clown FREAKING out over BTA

I introduced my green BTA to my reef tank today and my Maroon Clown in FREAKING OUT over it. This is my first anemone, so I am a little concerned about it.

The clown in swimming in it pretty aggressively. I tried to net him and put him in my refugium for a "time out", but the anemone backed into a part of the rocks that I can't get to with a net. And even if I could the clown just backs into it even more. It reminds me of visiting my brother's puppy. The moment she sees me she is all over me. I am worried that the clown is going to smother the anemone.

Has anyone had this problem? At what point should I be concerned (i.e., what signs of distress should I look for)?

Thanks,

ive heard of maroons ripping anemones to shreds from being overly excited.

put a strawberry container over the nem so the clown cant get to it for a few days so the clown will cool down.

WHEN you say fraking what do you mean is it like thrashing n the anemone is it biting it, what. Clows really do clown around in their anemone when they are first introduced.

Horny little fellor eh?

I would do as mentioned. Usually Maroons need anemones 3x their size so they dont inflict so much damage to the anemone, since they are more likely to be agressive with their anemones.

HTH and good luck.

My maroon was extreamly violent with my bta at first. very rough and squirming non stop day and night.

My bta acted pretty bad about it. shrunk up tiny with a gaping mouth. I put mine in time out as well, but as soon as she was out she was just as rough.

I crossed my fingers and just waited to see what would happen.

after about a week of thrashing, she calmed down. now she is super docile and treats it like its made of glass, lays in it very gently and treats it great.

Time outs just seemed to get her even more excited when she got out

so what your seeing is very normal, and it will get better. just hope your bta is a extreamly healthy specimin. and it'll pull thru most likely

how big is your maroon?

Thank you all for your replies. I left them alone over night (mainly because I didn't have a strawberry container and the stores were already closed).

This morning my clown appears to have calmed down a little. BTA doesn't appear to be that stressed, what a trooper. Before I turned on the lights he looked droopy, but the moment I turned on the lights (Blue first, then white) he perked right up. His tenticles are still bulby and not at all stringy.

I tried to entice the clown away with food, but he'll only go about 4" from the BTA. Clown only eats pellets, but my goby eats brine shrimp and once that passed by the clown immediately grabbed it and stuffed it into the BTA. I think they'll be the best of friends.

The clown is about 1.25-1.5 inches. He isn't being violent per se, but I'm sure the BTA didn't appreciate his excitedness.

My only concern now is the lighting. I put the BTA on the bottom because I've been told he'll move to where he is most comfortable. I'm running power compacts, so I assumed that he'd want to be higher in the tank. I'm just not sure that the clown will let him move...

Ya know, an anemone clown pair was my original concept for this tank. I moved away from it because it limited what else I could put in, but... it is really the most beautiful thing I've seem thus far in my saltwater adventures.

On a side note: This morning I noticed that my clown is only really rough on the BTA, when I am in front of the tank looking at them. Perhaps the clown is just trying to show me how excited he is about the BTA. I think I'll lay low for awhile and see if that helps.

the anemone will go were it pleases so dont worry about the clown "its just along for the ride" so to speak.

they look nice by the way.

yep. My nem has swam around my tank b4 and my maroon just stayed inside with her head peeking out. very cute!

Your nem is very nice. and quite addiquite for the size of your fish.

How many pow4er compacts ans how big a tank? Mine dident like pcs at all. after upgrading to a 250watt pendent it got very large and much healthier.

check out www.karensroseanemones.com dont forget to feed your bta (silverslides are GREAT and not the whole thing)

And you might want to up what your feeding your fish if its only eatting pellets. Brine has no nutitional value, but mysis shrimp has alot. clowns LOVE cyclopeze (I like frozen) as well as emerald entree for some vegi's :)

Clown has signficantly mellowed and it has only been 24 hours. Woo-hoo!

30g standard tank, Coralife power compacts 2-65w (10,000k white, true blue 03).

I was planning on spot feeding the BTA a mix of silverslides or krill every week.

Its not that I'm not feeding the clown frozen food, it's that it wont eat anything but pellets. It just grabs the food, drags it to the bottom, and leaves it there. Very weird. I've tried: krill, brine shrimp, formula 1 & 2, mysis shrimp, squid, and even "trigger formula." I've never tried cyclopeze, will have to.

Thanks for the site recommendation, I'll check it out.
