i need some info on maroon clowns. i know maroons can/will be terrors to tankmates but ive only ready those stories when the maroon has a mate (Worse when eggs are involved) and/or has an anemone to call home. if i have a 3", single maroon in a community reef do you think s/he will turn into a terror liek the stories i read or do they become terrors when they have a mate/anemone? debating about replacing my maroon with 2 percs (will move to another tank i own if i take him out) or leaving him in there.

if you suggest taking out the maroon how would you do that? wish i knew 1 week ago before i moved it form the 55 to the 75 :/

thanks for the help!

Depends on the individual. I have a laying pair that live well with small fish- i have singles that will bully any fish smaller than them, and thus are kept with triggers and whatnot. One thing is pretty across the board with the maroons and tomatos- they bite people often and hard!

I kept one in a 90g reef with a mixture of different fish for about 5 years. She would be aggresive only to protect her little spot in the tank, She would chase but never hurt any fish, In fact the only one she ever hurt was me... I could not put my hand in the tank without getting bit. It took about 1 year to host in a purple long tip Anemone.

They are a wonderful fish with tons of personality, and sometimes a little attitude.....

hmm alright thanks for the info, i do know bout them bting people, was at an LFS when one drew blood on an employee. so far i have not noticed aggression with the maroon so idk waht to do lol. all the fish in the 75 are very peaceful actually... so what should i do, keep it in there or take it out and put it in an aggressivish tank?

i really want to put an RBTA in the 75g reef but should i risk the maroon becoming aggressive by adding one?

Since they will host a rock or something no matter what- I don`t think the anemone is a issue. I personally would just keep a eye on the fish. If you enjoy him in the tank- leave him until he becomes a problem, if ever. Its always good to a have a borderline fish in the tank-when it becomes a issue you have a excuse for another tank-perhaps a dedicated anemone clown one!

I really hate my maroon. I got it for valentines day for my wife figureing it would last longer then flowers. gesssh what a mistake... Its killed my goniopora, terrorizes tank mates, knocks over new frags I add, it even tryed pushing a 3 lb rock i just added, bites me when I least expect it. I do everything I can to tick it off. Move rocks to cover his hang out spot. tryed to stab it with a syringe. Yesterday I put a mirror in the tank, that really got him ticked..Yippeeee ..round # 1,167 to me!!!

syrinx- ok thanks ya its nice to have a borderline fish cause you get a small shot of adrenaline but it also nags you constantly that you could wake up to bloodshed lol. i was thinking of piggybacking a 29 that i have off my 55 for an anemone tank lol, but im really busy with school :/ well do you have any idea on how to catch him?

purge- so do you tick it off because he ticks you off? lol catch him and trade him in for a dif fish. tell the wife that he is being way to aggressive (oh course you still like him ;) ) but you would like to get a replacement, perhaps a different type of clown.

Get him used to flake food- and when he comes to the top- swoop himout with a net. Fish traps. bags, two nets,- all those things work well- but with clowns the swoop works for me more often than not. Gotta get him first try though- they are fast learners!

Calm down...your maroon clown is just being a fish. She's not being destructive out of malice; she's responding to ingrained instincts. It's your fault for impulse-buying a fish rather than hers for just doing what she's evolved to do. Do your maroon and yourself both a favor and find her a new home--without trying to hurt or tease her first. Trying to stab your fish with a syringe isn't going to stop her aggravating behavior, but it is cruel.

ETA: purge43, if I come off like I'm attacking you, I apologize. I just love animals and it upsets me when humans get angry at them for engaging in their natural behavior, instead of understanding why they're acting the way they do and trying to either accommodate or re-home. Please remember that your maroon, as aggravating as her destructiveness and aggression undoubtedly are, is ultimately very tiny and defenseless against you (yes, she can bite you, but you could kill her if you wanted), and dependent upon you. I can definitely understand being irritated by a fish that rips up your tank and bites you, but the best solution is to find her a new home, or trade her in at the LFS, instead of tormenting her. Thanks for reading this.

I have a 3 or 4" gold bar. Have for 3 years in my 180. Just moved it into a 60 cube with a 12" sebae. In e 180 he used a rock as his home base. Now he took to the seba and booted out a small clown that was there. He has been fine with the other fish from what I can tell. No issues at all.
