Maroon clown starts attacking PBT after 10 years

2 maroon clowns and one PBT live together for 10 years in 180 gallon with numerous anemones and Rock. Over the last week the larger clown(similar size to PBT) has taken off 30-40% of PBT tail. Seems like he has decided to take out the PBT. What happened after 10 years of coexistence?

Apologize for not adding much here but I had no idea about the lifespan of those fish - 10 years is impressive but hopefully you have many more years to look forward too (as long as the aggression stops).

Nature.

They are not friends and never were.
They have been eating and competing for the same food.
Mom may have decided it is time to "create" a nest.
etc.

I have cannot remember one time my dominant/pairs accepted anything they have identified as a target after they decided it was a target.

They will stake out new territory with a stressful tank change, but I'll wager you'll return to the same situation.

IME: Bigger tank, or someone needs to go.

Thanks everyone. Here is some more info. I got the two cinnamon and the PBT at about the same time. One cinnamon has grown from about 2 inches to a really fat and wide 4 inches. The other cinam,on has grown from about 2 inches very very little. The PBT is about the same size as the cinammon having grown at the same rate. They have been together for ten years and within the last week the cinammon said this is my tank and I am after you PBT. This is 180 gallon with just those three fish and inverts. Important point, I started with one bubble tip 10 years ago and they have spread thru the whole tank maybe 20. I think this has triggered the cinammon to think with all these bubble tips it's now all my 180 gal. The clowns spawn frequently , and the little clown hangs with the eggs but nothing ever happens. I am sad I think I will lose the PBT. The clown has become deranged. I have been feeding them the same for 10 years, only change is the anemones have really spread.

That is amazing after 10 years. Looks like the clown goes, the PBT goes, or the PBT dies. What a bummer....

The problem here is because of the anemone. They have spread and cover most of the tank. The clowns see this and think that the whole tank belong to them. Same thing happen in my tank. So to fix this issue, just reduce the amount of anemone to one or two.

Interesting hypotheses! I'd be curious to see if stress level gone down if the pbt would grow... I still can't get over the fact that it's so small after 10 years in a 180.

I had yellow tang the size of a dime get to 5" in 18 months in a 66... I had to trade it off to a friend with a bigger tank. Same story with a mimic eibli tang got it at 2 1/2" got to 4 1/2" in 12 months had to put it in a bigger tank....

Tangs can have a decent natural variation in size.

+1
For certain!!!I'm 5' 100 Pds and someone else may be 7' 465! This is my 19th year in the pet industry I've seen my share of genetic aberrations such as tri-coloured male cats, blue eyed white deaf dogs, funky snake and amphibian mutations...

But I was just interested on the outcome if the stress element was removed [emoji6]

I have no where to move the PBT or the clowns, but I have removed about 15 anemones on one side of the 180. I do believe the anemones triggered the situation. Things have stabilized for the time being, but not sure the clown will understand it is not still all his. I wish the PBT would hang on the anemone free side but he seems to prefer the anemone side. Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I also am amazed my PBT has not grown more after 10 years, actually he is 12 YO.
