Maroon clowns

When I finally get off my lazy butt and get my big tank going I was thinking about get a pair of maroon clowns, one gold strip and one white strip! I have heard that they can be a real pain and quite aggresive, but I love the color of them. Anybody have any experience with them?

I have a pair of gold stripped in my 150 (pic below). The female is very aggressive towards me (specifically, my hand); but not too bad with the other fish. She only gets aggressive with them if they wander too close to her nem. However, from reading on here, others have had a much worse experience with them. I would probably add them last.

You want to get just one and let it turn into a female and gain considerable size. Then get another juvi. The size difference should allow them to quickly establish sexual identification without too much bickering.

I have had mine for over 10 years and would never buy another. She beats on EVERY fish in the tank and draws blood biting my hand while doing maintenance. Beautiful fish, but be prepared for massive aggression and make sure you line up tank mates that can handle some abuse. I.e. no shy fish like jawfish, delicate wrasses.

Beautiful clowns, just the look I want in ones I get, wide bands! Do you know how old they are? Did they change there strips as they got older?

That's what I am worried about. I might have to get a different pair type, maybe black ice!!!

another brutal maroon here. had it years ago and their bite is very noticeable. killed other fish too.

The female is about 5-6 years old; the male less than 2.

The female was a "him" when I got him from a friend. He looked about like my current male. Over the course of a year, he grew quite a bit and darkened considerably. That's when I knew he had changed into a "she"'; so I went out and got the smallest male I could find so they would pair up without conflict. Took about 18 months for "baby clowny" to go from "boy clowny" and then turn into "man clowny", but they are finally laying eggs.
:D

Two more things about the female Maroon you may not like:

1. She throws sand everywhere with her tail (but only in one spot below her nem). This makes it difficult to keep any bottom dwelling corals nearby.

2. Speaking of corals, she will push off any new frags that I place too close to her nem.

One of my least favorite fish for all reasons already stated. I wouldn't have another if given to me. You might stick w/ percs or occys; they're usually nicer but still can pack a mean bite if spawning.

All boils down to individuals. I kept a mated pair together in a 60 cube for 5 years with no aggression problems whatsoever. Luck of the draw IMO.
