Maroun 150g Build Thread

Thanks for the info Marc.
The shot above was taken at night time with the heads closed so that I can catch those extensions. Are those vermetid snails bad? should I take them off?
Any specific reason you think it's not helathy that I could deal with?

Vermetids are usually not a big deal, but they do cast a web to catch particulates from the water column, which can sometimes irritate neighboring corals. I have a hard time thinking they would irritate a Torch coral, but it is something to keep an eye on and decide for yourself.

The tissue of each polyp is a the tip, with very little tissue on the skeleton. Normally you'd see 1" of tissue on each branch leading up to the polyp. Feeding the heads at night may help encourage more growth and perhaps the tissue will grow back over the skeleton a bit. At this point, those polyps are solely at the tip, not really all that anchored to the coral. Is this what the looked like when you purchased it, or has it gotten to this point on its own?

Marc I just looked at it now and yes you're right there is very minimal tissue on the skeleton nothing close to 1" you mention. It did look this way since I got it as I remember but will check in my old pics to make sure. I am feeding 1-2 times per week under only actinics and with stopping the circulation. guess I'll have to feed it a bit more.
Thanks for the info.

Here's an example of a Lobo in my angled tank doing something somewhat similar to your Torch. It seems okay, but it refuses to grow more tissue on its base.

Thanks for the pic Marc.
Follwoing your comments on corals having potential but not being healthy... I'm reviewing years old pics of my tank and am coming to a conclusion that over the years all the corals that lived in my tank were living (maybe surviving) but not thriving for some reason that I still have to find out.
mushrooms live but rarely split, zoos survive but don't grow to the described pest proportions, GSP survive for a while then die for no reason, Euphilias live for months then start loosing heads one at a time, leathers fade away in a matter of 1-2 months (now guess I'm lucky with the 2 I have. The only things that thrived in my tank are few mushrooms mainly one rock with elefanthenor rhodactis mushrooms, the carpet and BTA I still have from 5 and 8 years and some type of leather maybe a sinularia that I got with me years ago from holland and was torn to small pieces in the bag and it grew back much bigger than it was, and maybe few fish. weirdly my water tests are always OK my lighting which is now much better was not bad for what I have in the 80....
Unfortunately I can't find or think of what to check anymore. I'm hoping the 150 once it matures a bit will be a better experience. I

It sounds to me like minor issues have occurred in your tank that retarded the growth of your corals. It is possible that certain ones simply won't do well in your system and you need to accept that and get the ones that will. However, the corals you've described are mostly easy ones and shouldn't be a problem.

I would verify your test numbers. You may think salinity is perfect, but someone else may use their testing equipment to find out you've been wrong for months (or years). Numbers that seem to be fine while corals don't do well - that's your visual indicator that something is NOT fine. The trick is figuring out what.

I would suggest you keep changing carbon frequently in this tank. Weekly, 2 cups in a reactor. See if that doesn't make a difference. You've already resolved the stray electricity issue, and you have more light finally. It now comes down to food and water quality.

Sinularia is rather toxic, as are mushrooms. They are constantly exuding that stuff into the water, and other corals may suffer. That is why I'm suggesting more carbon on a regular basis.

You asked about Switzerland previously... I used to live there, and went to school there for three years. I love Basel, and wish I lived there now. Oh well, these are the cards I was dealt.

Got that one right, as my hydrometer broke few months ago and when I got a new one I noticed it was 0.2-0.3 off I crosschecked it with an other hydrometer at the LFS and it measured the same as the new one. then I got a refractometer and found out the new one was also 0.1-0.2 off whiche meant I was keeping my tank at aroudn 1.028-1.029 for years. This was solved weeks ago so now I'm hoping it's the only culprit.
I will start changing the carbon every week now instead of biweekly.

Nostalgia Nostalgia:)
Looking forward to be there this weekend as It's one of those "countries still to visit" on my never ending list.

a few more pics to keep this thread alive while Iàm in swityerland for this week and in turkey for next week.
Still struggling with the Swiss keybord so excuse any typpos.

a sponge that I got from dubai few months earlier. seems to be doing fine in the tank. I initially got one before which lost a big part of it and the remianing (1/4) of it is now doing fine so I thought I try a bigger piece. this one seem to have made it since day 1 without any loss of tissue. Low light till now and low low-moderate flow will move it a bit higher after some time I guess.

And the one I previously got which lost around3/4 of it but now is doing fine.

One sinularia? that I got years ago from a trip to holland. it was crushed and torn to small pieces in shipping so I took a few pieces and stick them on a rocl and they grew to this. one of them was attached to 2 rocks so I split it recently and its been fine. medium light medium current.

Are these really sinaularia?

Mushrooms:
these are some of the oldest corals in my tank got them at the same time with the carpet anemone from a friend tearing up his tank and they have been doing ok since years. They are still only 4 in number and did not get new groeings on the rock nor divide. some did create new mouths but I was afraid to cut them. they did grow considerably. I Idd them to be Elefanthenor rhodactis species I guess.

I got these two rocks also from Dubai 3-4 months ago they seem to be doing fine in lower light and mow flow. they showed more orange and green at the lfs under actinic than they do in my tank.

are these floridae mushrooms?

Some red actinodiscus mushrooms. I have 3 rocks of those and they were in mid level in my 80 G with much less lighting. I now have them at the sad level and some a bit in the shade, the one rock not in the shade bleached the first and is totally white now and the two others have bleached a bit darker than white where they stopped bleaching I guess. do you think they will get their colors back? should I place them under a rock extension to cut the light more on them or could they be bleaching because of lack of light? any one had them recover their lights?

DSC_9912.jpg

these hairy mushrooms are very close to them and have not bleached at all? anyone know if actinodiscus mushrooms usually need more or less light than hairy mushrooms? Iàm afraid to move the actinodiscus in any direction in fear of causing more damage to them.

there was a controversy in the Id of this Snail by Marc and Insane clownfish earlier, hereàs a better picture so is it a Black foot Tiger Trochus ir an Astrea.
Black foot Tiger Trochus- not an Astrea.

Marc on a side note Switzerland Is a great place to be and I totally get what you meant by missing it. I like the people a lot around here a lot and its a chance to exercise my french which I have not spoken for more than 10 yrs...
I will be leaving here on Staurday back home for 4-5 hours to check on the family and the tank and then for 5 more days to Turkey. so far my wife is keeping up with the water top off (Still have to add an ATO) and feeding the tank and adding the additives as per a daily list of things to do that I have set. I have prepared the daily portions of food for here and kept them in teh fridge so all she has to do is to pickup one cup daily and give it to the tank. same for the additives... I^hope i will not have any bad surprises when I get back. also hoping to find some good LFS in Turkey (will be in Corlu this time) to got some stuff back with me. I had find a great shop in Izmir in turkey but unfortunately dont have one additional day to fly there to getsome SPS. next time I guess.

I am pretty sure the mushrooms that you asked about being floridae are actually ricordia yuma. Ricordea florida look very similar, but the little bumps that cover them don't appear on the mouth itself like on yours and other yumas.

edit: I'd also bet they would show much more vivid coloration under brighter lighting.

The coral you thought is sinularia is Cabbage Leather.

I agree with coop47 about the Yuma identification.

I'm still not sure on the snail. It looks pretty tall, compared to most Turbo Astreas I've seen. Could be unusual shell growth, or a different type I guess.

Several of your corals look see-through (note the mushrooms). These should be colored up. When you get back into town, we'll try to nail down what is going on (back to the basics).

Glad you enjoyed Switzerland. Sounds like Turkey had some nice things to see as well.

thanks for the info coop47
As for the yumas they came from an LFS with only actinic fluorescents so Iàm taking it really slow beofre putting them under more lighting. but its good to know that they should handle the more intense lighting as I need to fill some more litted areas.

thanks Melev.
does the fact that its a cabbage leather mean its less toxic to SPS and LPS?
I was worried mostly about this coral when I was discussing carbon and onther stuff on your thread. Actualy I only have 2 other leathers (will post pics later) and I just plan to add a sarcophyton hoping it grows as big as the one you have in your tank.
The mushrooms are bleaching unfortunately still have to know if its the lighting or else. will post new pictures when back.
I still have 3-4 days in switzerland beofre coming back, as to Turkey I have been there for around 15 weeks in the last 2 years so I guess I already saw most of hte nice things to see there. Still their Kebabs are always worth a new trip.

Cabbage Leather are more benign. Sinularia is toxic to SPS, and in years past people would talk about their reef doing poorly, only to find out that they had that coral in the same water. I guess the word finally got out and people have steered clear of it. :)

Finally I was determined to read this tank thread. What a great picture documentation of your tank build.

I really enjoyed following how your corals are recovering esp the sps's.
How do you obtain your corals--do you get them in every country you work and are you allowed to fly with them.
We are allowed to bring coral from the US back to Canada but not the live rock---which makes it hard to bring it back
Still don't understand this one.

Great thread and you can bet I will be watching and participating on it

Thanks Capn.

am just hoping things will continue to improve and hopefully start to grow.
as for the corals, I hav two LFS here where one gets stocks every few weeks but the problem is that all of it is sold within few days so I have to buy corals that have not settled in therefore have lower survival rate.they only get softies and few LPS but at one time they got some SPS. The other one has only fresh water items but I can always chose the stuff I want from their list and they will get it for me with the next shipment. I have to receive it in the bag and pay for it in whatever condition it comes in. I onlly use this for soft corals and so far it was not bad.
Lately I have been getting lots of soft corals and/fish from Dubai where I buy it and head to the airport where a Vet examines it and gives me a health certificat and I pack it in foam coolers in a bag that I check. when on travel I mainly buy whatever good brand food aditives test kits pumps that I find and bring it with me.I also flew with some corals from Holland few years ago only with a copy of the CITES license ofthe LFS and had no problems except for most of them being crushed in shipping.Eventually whatever I need can be supplied to in the LFS but prices are outrageous (150 USD for a Phosphate reactor)...
Dont really understand this no LR rule what if you buy a small mushroom that comes on a piece of LR???

Great thread and you can bet I will be watching and participating on it
Thanks counting on it.
