Maroun 150g Build Thread

Joee you can relax now I just took those "plasters" out.

LOL
Nice choice for those handles. Yes they do match with the vertical lines in the stand and canopy wood and the color is really nice.

Very nice scape indeed. I like how your 1-2 month old tank looks like if it was a very established tank coral wise and very clean sand at the same time.
About your scape you could skip the mid level corals and get lower corals that reach higher to add to the view of what you already have in the mid level.
Very nice RBTA on the RT but i would worry about that carpet below as they are very aggressive fish eaters?
What fish do you have in there right now and what are your plans for future fish?
So finally you decided to keep the Seio in the tank? Are the
CL outputswthat evident when you looking from the front to the tank?
Can you please explain if your concept for that pump partition in the tank is giving you the requested flow or not? and if yes then why are you keeping the Seio?
Sorry lots of questions but I like this concept.

I really like the layout of your tank. It looks nice, clean and simple. I wouldn't change much at this point. Let your arm heal. ;)

What is the thing on the wall behind the tank? You better keep the back glass clean if you want to read it, right?

Joeee,
Thanks for your compliments.
To answer your questions, Tank is indeed less than 2 months old but remember that it was a transition from a 10 years old 80 G, most of the corals except for the ones I recently bought and which I will post pics of soon have been in my tank for more than 2-3 years with some of them like my old RBTA has been in the tank since 2000. so I guess most of the tank is established.
One thing that I don't really like is the difference in the tint between the old and new rocks and also with some of the old rocks that are now positioned exposing areas of them that were in the dark and therefore are more white than other areas in the tank, but this will change in few months from now and hopefully I will have some nice coralline build up now. I do have some higher extending corals like the gorgonians and the leathers on the right side of the tank but its not like having a rising slope from front to back if you get what I mean. I tried a lot however with the size of my rocks and maybe because of the tank being only 22 inches deep it was difficult to achieve. Yet I believe I like this setup. My burning arm will not tolerate more time under the haildes too.
The RBTA you mention on the left is a new aquisition that was at the LFS for months and I always wanted. They only sold it because they were braking up the tank for relocation. it did cost a bit but it was well worth it I guess. My carpet has benn in the 8- for around 5 years and I only lost 5-6 fish over that period. Mind you I had 3 other larger carpets in the tank and I saw each one of them spitting only 1-2 fish maybe. Never new ifit was the clowns bringing the dead fish tot he anemone or if it was actually the anemones catching the fish. But I guess with only one carpet in a much larger tank its now safer for the fish.
I have the following fish in the tank right now:
1 maroon clown
1 hyppo tang
1 kole tang
1 coral beauty (model citizen till now hope I get so lucky with a flame)
1 copperband butterfly
4 cardinal new aquisition but htey were in the LFS for more than a month.

for future fish plans:
Yellow tang is high on the list
Achilles Tang if I ever see one.
Powder blue
sixline wrass
yellow cories wrass to help deal with pests.
a flame angel
Lyretails
As for the Pumps partition I guess it's working as intended. I actually have 1 950 GPH OR pump, 1 New visijet 800 GPH feeding the closed loop, I will be adding one 300 GPH powerhead feeding an upward spraybar behind the rocks and maybe an additional one with direct output for horizontal flow behind rocks. I will also be adding a 300 gph powerhead feeding a 5-6 1/4 inch output tube that I can more directly orient for specific flow needs. In case I need more flow after all that I might add another 800 GPH visijet pump connected to another CL in the tank. but I guess with my current load what I have is necessary.
I did decide to keep the Seios in as they were providing a great surface agitation and a nice circular water movement from LT up hitting the right upper side and coming back from RT low towards the left, which is providinga very nice smooth flow for the corals on the lower fornt side of the tank which are mainly softies and require exactly this type and amount fo flow. I did try a ltoto hide the pumps better than this but its not working as they are too high in the tank. Might take them out and glue some flat rock pieces on them or just wait till they get cvered with alga to disappear. People looking a the tank never notice them but I can't see but them when I look at the tank.
Will post better pictures of my water circulation system once I finish it and will try to post a video of hte flow I'm getting so that others can tell me if I need more flow or not.
CL outlets are not visible at all when looking at the tank but when you look from down you'll see them. I will work on making them a bit shorter once I finsih more important stuff on the tank.

I really like the layout of your tank. It looks nice, clean and simple.

Thanks Melev glad to have you back here after your trip.
I'm liking this Layout more and more after 3 people out of 3 said it's fine. guess I'd just leave it be.

Let your arm heal.

Well even if I try to put my arm in the tank it's jsut pulling out on its own:D
Seriously it did hurt for a couple of days and is itching now like those sun exposure allergies thing...
My friends at home are expecting free solarium sessions when I get the rest of the lights.
That could help with the expenses of the tank. ;)

What is the thing on the wall behind the tank? You better keep the back glass clean if you want to read it, right?
This is the Balcony light switch. Don't remind me, I forgot to put the poster before putting the canopy on and installing the electricals on the canopy. I could always unplug them and take it out but I'm too lazy to do it. Guess when I'm back I'll just try to clean the glass with those telescopic glass wipers they use at shops and then slide the poster and try to scotch it on the glass hoping it will not build bubbles.

Now for my recent corals additions.
Got this SPS from the LFS display tank, they had it in there for a couple of months and it had been put directly below a 250 W MH which caused it to burn and many parts of it had died but it still has some living tissues in other parts as you can see.
I was wondering if I should frag the living pieces of it already but when I reached home two parts had broken out of it so I just inserted those in holes in some of my rocks. parts of it was a bit whitish and I'm afraid that this could be RTN. I'm hoping to find it in good shape when I get back.
It's now directly under my 150 W MH 14 K which is a bit less than what it was getting but still strong light. it get constant mild flow in addition to flow from my SCWD CL. aAy ID and info if this one is hardy or if it require special care would be greatly appreciated.

here are the two pieces I put in rocks. Didn't place them in the frag tank as I don't have good lights on it yet. so now they are in the bottom of the tank getting lower light than the mother colony and mild directional flow.

Thanks Kar.
Never heard of it too but sure felt the pain of it.
Actually my skin is peeling now. don't know if exposure to MH light is that healthy

Does your MH have the glass in place to filter UV radiation? It sounds like it might not since your skin got cooked.

That or you were working under those lights for a long long time. Get some aloe vera and spread that over your skin to promote quick healing. It pulls the heat out of the area.

Try and moisturize as much as possible. Aloe based moisturisers are good as Marc suggested. That should make your skin less irritable. Rubbing cocoa butter lotion on the area which is peeling is also known to help with irritation and pain. As it seems very similar to sunburn. Next time you might try using sun screen when working under the MH or just turn them off.

Hope that helps. ;)

If you do use sunscreen, make sure it is reef safe because it will come off in the water. Turning off the lights or raising them up would be a better option, or at the very least reduce your time working beneath them.

When I was snorkeling in Playa Del Carmen (near Cancun, Mexico), we had to purchase a biodegradable sunscreen to reduce the pollution to their waters. It might have been a sales pitch, but we did it because it felt like the right thing to do.

I completely forgot about the sunscreen thing. Do you have T5 bulbs to supplement the MH. If you do, It might be an idea to just leave them on while working in the tank. This will prevent burn as T5's dont get as hot as MH and you can still see what you are doing.

Thanks Marc, Kar.
The MH have the screen installed however I did my scaping three times with my hand a bit close to them. total working time was around 10-12 hours with both lights on. the following day my arm was red and painfull so I shut the halide above it off. My T5 should arrive next week I guess. I installed 2 actinic fluorescents and one ultra bright marine white fluorescent from arcadia to light up the tank while working with it. Funny thing is that they have literally no effect on the coloration with the halides on. On my older tank I'm sure the fluorescents were more intense than the 150 W 20k halide that I had. these are 14 k 150 w but look much more intense is this because of the kelvin difference or could it be that the reflectors I have now are better than the chinese reflector I had on the old tank?
Right now getting Aloe Vera or biodegradable sunscreen is next to impossible as I'm in a business trip, went to Dubai for a couple of days then to Libya where I still am till tomorrow. I'm sure they'll think I'm speaking chinese if I ask for aloe vera...
I went to a store and got some weird looks while asking the guy which cream gives more mosturizing effect between two I found
Now Solarium sessions are being organized in front of the tank for 10 dollars a session :D

This has been a trip to hell for the last 2 days as they lost my luggage with my suits in it. had to give a presentation to 5-6 doctors dressed in my Levis and a Tshirt. Today it's 11PM and I just finsihed finding a suit that is decent enough to wear and got lucky to find someone to adjust it to fit immediately. choosing shoes took me over 25 shops that had only one size of each pair of shoes they had, in the end I just escaped doing a presentation in a medical congress tomorrow for aroud 50 doctors in Jeans...

Sorry had to vent.
here's a pic of my arm that I took with my phone camera, white balance is a bit off my arm is more red than it looks. hope it will not cause a Melanoma.:eek1:

Aloe Vera is a natural plant that looks a little bit like a cactus. You can cut open the branch and apply some of the fleshy stuff within on your arm. It usually comes in bottles as a green or clear gel; it is not unique nor difficult to find.

The countries you are in get quite hot, so I imagine you have access to all kinds of burn creams, especially for those with sunburns.

Get well soon. And I hope you get your suitcase back.

Thanks again Marc.
I'm quite familiar with Aloe Vera actually my mom keeps a couple of plants on her balcony as she uses the gel in them for something. however try to find it in Libya.
Should be back to the Luxury of Dubai tomorrow where I shall be Anyway got a phone call from my wife and she's telling me that the red coral I got 9ie the SPS I have above has three branches that are becoming whitish. Any advice on what I should do when back after tomorrow? do yo uthink I should just frag the whitish parts?

hope it will not cause a Melanoma.

Shouldn't happen but if it starts to scab or become very painfull then consult your GP. It looks just as if you've had 12 hours out in the sun with no sunscreen. You should get a tan pretty soon. That will be something at those confrences, Having to explain why one of your arms is tanned and the rest of your body not. ;)

LOL Kar,
I did get some weird looks explaining that I had "projectors" for an aquarium...
I'm glad it's over and am at the airport now on the way back.
Can't wait to reach home tomorrow evening to check how things went with the tank.
As for my arm it's not painfull at all today but just peeling like after a sunburn.

There is something you can buy, the name slips my mind right now. Its like green gel, I use it when on holiday/vacation and it cools sunburnt areas down straight away. It actually seems to prevent peeling a little aswell. I will have a look in my suitcase as I've got some in there I think.

EDIT*** Its called Banana Boat Aloe Vera gel. Im not sure if it would be available over there though. But its definitely good stuff.

Thanks Kar.
I couldn't find the one you mentioned but did get some after sun gel Containing Aloe vera. it now just looks like a regular sunburn with the skin peeling close to reaching the ends of the affected area.

Like your new avatar, did you take this picture?

Should be back home by today evening and tomorrow heading to the LFS to see if they have got T5 Stocks and 250 W MH. I currently have two 150 W double ended HWI 14 K and will be getting a 250 W 20 K doule ended HQI all made by Arcadia. my 2 150 will be on the rt and lt side with the 250 in the middle. how many T5s do you think I should go with and should I add actinic T5 or white ones? My initial plan was to go with white T5 and regular marine T8 actinics. however after seing that the regular fluorescent actinics made no difference on the light color (still without the 250 20K) I am sure they will have no effect when the 250 goes in. I'm not complaining of the white colour but would love to have it jsut a bit more blue. do you think I should rely on the 250 20k for that or just add 2 Actininc T5 and 2 white ones also. Guess I'll also keep the regular actinics for 1 hour in the morning and another hour before complete lights off? I never had T5s with my MH and therefore am open to any suggestions you have. I believe that in addition to my MH I can add one row of T8 and 2 or maybe 3 of T5 so any suggestions on this and on lighting schedule are appreciated.
