marshall island health question

hello fellow reefers... i've been thinking about this for a couple of months now. it might sound odd but still am considering the possibilities....

do products that we buy which come from the marshall islands radioactive??? example would be say marshall lr, corals and fishes. reason i ask is, marshall islands is where we did all the nucleur testing and what not.

i recall while going to school about Chernobyl or something, where they have thier earthworms the size of rattlesnakes due to the nucleur meltdown. and lets not forget our japanese pal Godzilla came after the abomb was dropped on the japanese.

all kidding aside, i have been seriously thinking about this and wouldn't want to be housing something which could cuase some kind of cancer or be it radioactive byproducts around my family. it does concern me. could anyone with more info or the same concerns chime in??? again, this is products from the marshall islands. i know the fix would be to get things from the fiji ilands. and ofcourse the reason being, i've got some marshall LR in my tank now.

o yes, and btw the fiji islands aren't that far away from marshall islands. they are all in the same area but marshal is north of the equator and fiji is south of the equator i believe

Well if I remember my physics class long ago, I would say you are relatively safe. The effect of a nuclear bomb in which gamma rays are byproducts of nuclear fission, pass through items and it is that passing of those harmful rays are what screw things up inside and introduce anomalies in the cell division patterns. Corals and live rock are not actually hosting gamma emitting particles like uranium or Plutonium which are radioactive, so I think you would be safe.

As long as you are not eating any potential mutant corals you should be ok. Now if you are eating the coral, well, you might already be experiencing the effects of something far more impacting than radioactive corals and should seek help right away. :)

Im not pro on this but. I think the fish or corals over time would have some visible defects.

Also How much can radio active penetrate water.

How long does it take for Nuclear exposer to the atmosphere or surface to dissipate.

The lingering radioactivity would be diminished by the flow of currents. The testing done on these islands were done by underground testing or dropping on the land mass. The US decontaminated the island in 1980 by taking the top soil (some other measures that I can't remember) piling it all up and then putting a concrete cap on it.

I love Marshall islands rock it makes my tank have such a pretty green glow:D

In reality you should not worry about any health hazards from rocks or corals from marshall islands because the testing was atmospheric any radiation which landed in the ocean has now been spread all over the globe by the current for all of us to enjoy
also the chernobyl was a meltdown where the reaction was out of control and due to the higher amounts of fissionable material in the reactor and the small area of dispursement would have caused more radioactive contamination to the are around the chernobyl. If radation is a concern of yours i would be much more worried about Rancho Seco or Any of the 5 or 6 Navel ship yards that are with a 100 mile of you
really nothing to really stress about

Wow, you're right...

Wow, you're right...

Just to be safe, I think you should give all your corals to me, the risk of contamination is too great a threat to ignore. Luckily I have a specially fabricated glass recepticle in which to house such hazardous nuclear waste.

by the way, where can I get one of those "rattlesnake sized" earthworms... sounds like a great conversation starter..."so, are you just happy to see me or is that an earthworm in your pants."
