Marshall Island LR

I am considering purchasing 40# of Marshall Island live rock from PA and would like to know if someone can give me a rough idea how much room in my 90g tank the rock will occupy. Example, would 40# of rock in the 5-8 inch size range fill a 5 gallon bucket, two 5 gallon buckets? Or another way of putting it, how many pieces of rock in the 5-8 inch range does it take to make 40#. This will go in a 90g over some base rock, and I would like to leave about half the tank available for swimming space.

Also would anybody like to tell me how they like their PA Marshall Island rock, how many pounds they purchased, and how many pieces and what size made up your order?

Thank you.

I've purchased marshall twice, both times the nano marshall, at about 1# per softball size piece it worked out well. Very happy.

How does new batch of MI look?

How does new batch of MI look?

Hi Jeremy,

I am waiting for your new batch of Marshall Island LR to cure so you can send me off 40lbs to put in my tank. Just wondering, how is the quality and color of the curing rock?

Thank you.

Well, my 40lbs of cured Marshall Island live rock arrived a couple days ago. The LR arrived in a styrofoam box, with a couple of heat packs attached to the underside of the lid. The LR had a very clean, fresh smell to it, hardly any odor at all. Each piece was wrapped individually in brown paper. The order contained 11 pieces of rock about 8 inches in size (as requested) and one smaller piece about 4 inches. There was only about 5 pieces of rubble, which was half the length of my thumb in size. The rock has an open structure to it, from a couple very "branched" coral heads to 'fused" pieces that have just a few small thumblike projections. The rock had purple coralline algae on it (needs to color up more) and thats about it (except for a couple pieces of grape algae). I have not noticed any other life on the rock, such as feather dusters or inverts.

This is my first time purchasing LR, so I am not experienced at judging the quality. Guess I expected to see a bit more life, but overall I am pleased.

Sorry, I do not have a camera. If I can borrow one I will try to post some pics.

doccarbon, while I have not ordered any LR from PA (yet), with the quality LR I have received in the past, you won't see too much straight out of the box. After you have it in your tank and of the course of a few days to weeks, even months, is when you start to see "things" pop out or appear. Good luck with the LR.
