Mata tang

Awe that's great! I'm sorry to report mine did not make it, that funny patch on his side got worse then he got pop eye, I tried everything to save him but to no avail.

finally identified mata tang in my tank... it is over 12"

I was looking on google and got saw this link.

is this a mata tang? from the pics i see on google it is.

I rescued it from a 90g when it was 10" and have it in my 180 for the last year. it grew very fast and I would believe it will grow more... 3" in a year...
got to get my 300g (5'x3'x30") up and running soon

It is one of my fav fish in my tank... hand fed... lets me pet it when i feed nori

and a groupshot with a chrysurus angel, 2 sailfin (or desjardini), and powder blue in the back

I, too, bought a Mata w/o knowing for sure what I bought. It took him a year or less to make it to 12" and now he's my favorite fish in the tank. He'll take nori or shrimp from my fingers and has never mistaken my fingers for additional pieces of food. When I use a hand scrapper to remove algae from tank he'll stay close to my hand (frequently bumping me) so he can swallow the next piece of algae as it comes off the blade.

His tankmates include six other Tangs (1 purple, 3 Hippos, 1 Scopas, 1 Yellow) and he's never started any fuss.
