Mated ORA clown pairs?

JELWYOMING
I have been watching your site with interest with regards to ORA mated pairs of clowns. Whenever I see these available, you note that they are "retired". What exactly does this mean? Any types abvailale soon? I am looking especially for either an ocellaris or Percula pair, but I will be interested in any of them that you get. Would you recommend any particular breeds where I could put two pair in a 120g? I think that most don't recommend this, but perhaps is they were already housed together?

jelwyoming,

Thank you for your interest regarding our retired ORA mated Clownfish pairs. These fish are referred to as “retired” because they have slowed down in production for ORA in the past few years. This does not mean they have stopped breeding only that they no longer are meeting the productivity quota for ORA. Most of the ORA Pairs are generally wild caught fish but some males in these pairs may be captive bred. They all vary in age and have been in captivity for some time and most of them are very large healthy adults.

We will have a pair of Clarkii Clownfish and a pair of Yellow Strip Maroon Clownfish available within the next couple of weeks. All these fish are fed a wide variety of foods from pellets, flake, mysis and brine shrimp. We do update our Divers Den selection daily and would recommend signing up for the notification at the following link.

We would only recommend housing a single pair of clownfish in your aquarium regardless the size. Adding additional pairs could raise the level of stress and reduce breeding productivity.

We would be happy to answer any additional questions you may have. Please feel free to contact us by telephone 1-800-334-3699 or email customerservice@liveaquaria.com.

Thank you.

Do you expect any non-ORA mated pairs in? I see that you have an ocellaris pair for sale. It is not clear if this is a mated pair or not.
What age would you expect the ORA pairs to be? I would hate to have them die of old age only a couple of years after purchasing them.

Jelwyoming,

When a mated pair of fish is offered it will be advertised as a mated pair, such as the ORA Retired Mated Pairs. All other pairs sold are shipped as one male and one female, and not guaranteed mated. These large healthy adults will vary in age, yet will provide you with many years of enjoyment. Clownfish have an approximate 10 year life span.

At this time we are not offering any clownfish on Divers Den. However, over the next few weeks we plan on offering Black Onyx True Percula Clownfish, Standard True Percula, and Black and White Ocellaris pairs. Once they have all passed our detailed quarantine procedures they will be offered under our Divers Den section.

We hope you find this information helpful!

jelwyoming,

We appreciate your dedication in assuring the clownfish are healthy. We would advise holding the fish for an additional two weeks prior to adding them to your display aquarium.

Have a great evening!

Thats a beautiful pair advertised there and at a good price, been breeding fish since the mid 80s I can tell you when the pair is retired only the frequency of the spawns change, they just spawn less often but the quality of the "babies" remains.

But clownfish can live more than 20 years, ORA has pairs that were adquired from the former Aqualife Research hatchery and been spawning since the mid 80s, if the fish they are retiring are some of those they are defenetely historical jewels.

Kevin, happy reefing!

ediaz,
I take it that you are telling me that these could be fairly old clownfish?
They are beautiful, but what a disappointment to have them die in a few years if they that old!

jelwyoming,

Those are beautiful fish! We will need to contact our Aquatics Director for additional information on the Clarki Clownfish located on Diver’s Den section. We will repost once we receive this information.

jelwyoming,

We have contacted our Aquaculture Coral & Marine Life Facility in regards to your questions on the Clarki Clownfish. These beautiful Clownfish pairs will vary in age. Although we are unable to confirm their exact age they will provide you with many years of enjoyment to come.

We have contacted ORA in regards to the origin of the clownfish. They have informed us they house both tank-bred and wild caught clownfish and there is no specific way of knowing the exact origin of the clownfish that are sent to us.

We hope you find this information helpful!

I can appreciate that they may not be able to provide exact ages, but I would hope that they could say if they are 5,10, 15 or older??

Jelwyoming,

Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to help with your questions. According to our Coral Farm, the pair of retired ORA Clownfish featured in our Diver’s Den are approximately 4-6 years old.
