Mating Maroon Clowns

I tried to mate a couple of maroon clowns. i put the smaller newcomer into a cage inside the tank for 4-days to aclimate to the tank and not have to go through the extra stress of the submissive behavior right away. This morning I let him into the main tank. The larger maroon did what I expected and went after the smaller clown. The smaller, after 5minutes became submissive did the seizure with his belly turned slightly up.

Everything seemed to go as planned. But all of a sudden the larger started attacking the smaller again and would not stop. The smaller was extremely stressed and his fins were getting torn up. So I caught the larger and put him in time out (the in water cage). My LFS said that if I leave him in the cage for 3-4 days everything will be alright. Any deas? I don't want send the smaller to his death. Is tehre any hope that they will be sexed and maybe mate?

I need as much help with this as I can.

If your smaller clown is less than an inch perferably less than 3/4" you may be ok. If bigger failure is unavoidable as both are most likely female. If the small is small enough to be male which by his behavior sounds like it may be.... keep trying the little one will get beat up then seperate them doesnt matter which just whichever is easier to catch. Even then you have a 50/50 chance. Good luck
