Matt's 5000ltr Display

Just found this fantastic build.... Hope you will eventually make a video tour of "the system" full of water. Congrats on great progress thus far.....

Can't believe I missed this thread so far!!!
Amazing planning and execution. Looking forward to see this tank full and running.

D3,

That creative box around piping, I see upsidedown slates on inside right? Is the objective to keep most of or all moisture from pipe entrance into sump room below? Will you fill around pipes with something?

Blimmey Matt :eek2:
I cant believe all that fantasic forward planning and drawing came down to that tangle. Bet you were not happy :headwally:
But sometimes thing get in the way and have to be worked round. You have contiued to move forward on this huge build, I cant wait to see all the system running .

Cheers Martin

Hi Martin...yeah I was pretty ****ed at myself for such a schoolboy error. I hope that I dont have too much frictional loss so the flow in the tank is still pretty good

Thanks reefocd...when it is running I will do a video.

Yeah the pipework will be entirely boxed in with doors for access. I am struggling for daylight with it getting dark around 5pm here...so it just leaves me weekends to work on the outside stuff. The boxing will be sealed to avoid rainwater entering the surge tank and fish room via the pipe holes. I will also insulate further around the pipes.

I braved the arctic conditions today and got a little more done on the surge tank in the daylight.

I used the space between the cladding and the surge tank stand to add more rockwool insulation.

I will need to stain the wood so it is a little more protected against the elements.

In all the voids I stuffed as much rockwool in as possible and then wrapped the top of the surge tank will additional insulation

I covered the top of the surge tank with sheets of insulation....

...fixed along the back edge so I can lift them up if needed

The underside of the hinged lid has also got sheets of insulation..as has the lip around the top edge.

Here's how I have left it tonight...nearly done

Sorry, I don't mean to sound overly critical but that is the least water-tight lid I've ever seen. I hope you have a plan to cover the whole top so that water will run off the shed roof and not down inside the shed.

Dave.M

Lol Dave ..you? Over critical?..never!
I still have more to do on it. I have some rubber to add which should seal where the door shuts.

some recent progress...

I have been soaking some of my rock in bleach followed by dechlorinator. Afterwards I jet washed it.

I have a lot of rock...too much IMO so I wanted to sort through it and discard the pieces that are less interesting.

The pile on the right are the keepers

At a guess I have discarded about 150kgs

I only looked at the pictures and before looking at the text, I assumed this was your dry mockup of the rockwork. I surely hope you are more imaginative when it comes down to it!

Still better aquascape, as-is, than half the tanks out there :lmao:

Matt. Nice to see you progressing at a steady pace ... Stay patient/methodical/analytical down the home stretch !

All the best,

Ive been away for a while, great to come back and see so much work done. Plumbing is always a pain in the *** so it's great to see so much of it finished. Cant wait to see the aquascaping start

thanks guys

All the plumbing is now finished and I have been working on the aquascape for the last 4 days. i hope to have some pics and video for the end of the week.

hi matt
looking good love the surge ,, would work well with a pipe with a 10mm routed slot in in it so the flow is more horizontal if that makes sense ...
if you wont to sell any of the rock drop me a me ,,
i thought the shed on the side of the house was for chickens lol ..
stew

Not sure i follow with the surge Stew?.I will adjust accordingly when it's running but so far I am happy with the standard 50mm pipe. I expected more "chicken coop" comments than I've had..in fact you're the first! I will weigh what rock I have left over when I'm finished and will shoot you a pm..how much are you looking for?

This has to be one of the most impressive builds I have seen.

Well done sir, well done
Thanks Gig'em, very kind.
Following along! nice build thread so far!

Thanks chealy..happy to have you along

I have finally scaped the tank..its currently filling with RO and should be full for the weekend. I will decide finally on the scape when I see how its impacted by the refraction.

But for now...heres a video.
