The tide had receeded a bit to expose some excellent sights!

There were huge mats of zoanthid!

I took lots of underwater shots with my sony/housing camera. Havent downloaded em yet. I'll share them here later.

This is my 5th time here and I have never seen the water clarity this good! Its absolutey CLEAR!

Great pics! Where are you staying? I am going in May, we will be in South Kihei area. How is the underwater life up there?

It's always nice to see our critters in situ. I've never seen urchins like those before; looks like some google time in front of me. Can't wait for the under water pics. Safe trip.

Edit: I see they're called ha’uke’uke kaupali. :)

Thanks guys!
Smoq; I am staying at the royal mauian at the south end of kam 1 in kehei. There is world class snorkeling in every nook and cranny of this island. The top places are honolua bay up above kapalua. La perous (sp) down below wailea and neighboring ahihi bay. But youre head will spin with how much good water there is here.

The clarity went to crap since a nice west swell rolled in. Heres the shots I mentioned.

Now that Ive been using a dslr for a few years its amazing how horrible p&s images look to me. But here they are...

Amazing, thanks for your recommendations. Can't wait! I picked up Maui Revealed guide and from what I read so far I don't know when to find time for diving. Are the ocean calm in the snorkeling spots?

That can be a problem here. On this side of the island summer and fall will have the lightest swells. I havent been here during a serious wave event, but theres always some rolling action in the water. If your snorkeling/diving near shallow sand, the rollers will churn it up and polute the visibility. But you get onto a reef (Which are everywhere) the water cleans up. And of coarse the further you get from tourists, the more diversity youll encounter. The three I mentioned above have all the qualities to make them almost a sure bet.

We drove up to the 10,000+ ft. summit of haleakala to watch the sun rise thismorning. And everyone will tell you this... "You have to do it once in your life if you go to Maui" Now, after the 5th time here and the first time on the summit, I completely concure!
