Maxi Carpet Anemone

Just an FYI, Petco in Henrietta has a gorgeous Carpet Anemone, easily 12" across and they are asking $45 for it. It looked quite odd crammed into that little 10-ish gallon enclosure.

They're all over the place... I'd leave them rt where they are.

And they're not maxi's.

the anemone in the picture is Haddon's anemone = Stichodactyla haddoni

"maxi", "maxi mini" and "mini" = Stichodactyla tapetum

there's big differences between the species

FYI: there's an EXCELLENT and FREE anemone FAQ at the top of RC's Anemone/Clownfish Forum. It's better than much of the currently published books on anemones.

Haddon's anemone is as likely to eat an ocellaris clownfish as it is host one (it's an opportunistic fish eater) and maxi anemones don't host ANY clownfish. This is why it's good to reserach before purchase!

Additionally: many anemones collected for the trade simply die in captivity due to poor handling, shipping care etc.
Haddon's anemone is one species to be concerned about. Clownfish DO NOT need an anemone. They will "host" in almost anything... and a good, easy to keep alternative are Sarcophyton ("toadstool" soft corals).

My first clown hosted with my mag float.

There were 4 ocellaris in the tank with the nem and they were at the far end of the tank. Obviously they knew something I didn't. As you can see they are nowhere in the pic.

Gary.......glad to see to put the truth forward.....please do some research or at least post here for help and even though it sometimes comes across as arrogance or condescending it is purely for the sake of the animal...and for everyones education.

just a FYI: Haddon's anemone is also known by the common name "saddle" carpet anemone and the Saddleback Clownfish (Amphiprion polymnus) makes a natural and excellent symbiont
