Maxi jet 1200 for sump?

Can I use a maxi jet for a sump if I use 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch pipe? It would be a PVC over flow. I believe the maxi jet only puts out 295 gph with 6' head.

A maxijet 1200 only produces 295 GPH at no head pressure, it delivers only 160 GPH at 4' of head pressure and a trickle at 6'. Unless your sump is at the same elevation as your DT or your tank is 30 gallons or less, I would use a different pump.

The MJ 1200 is 295 gph at zero head. I've been using one for about 9 months on a 30 gallon tank with a ten gallon sump. I'd guess it's moving about 150 gph at 48" of head. With a small sump the flow is adequate but not enough to create all the circulation in the tank. Depending on tank size you'll need additional circulation.

BTW, get the Cobalt Italian made MJ , they hold up better.

With a 20 gallon sump a Mag 5 or 7 is the most economical to buy with good reliability. Eheims cost more but are bullet proof and energy efficient.

The narrower the pipe the less loss due to head pressure. You would be better off with the .5" pipe.

Actually, it's the reverse. Smaller pipe gives a greater loss of head pressure, and it increases exponentially under 1".

The losses are from gravity (total height to pump,) the resistance of the pipe (proportional to length and 1/Radius to the 4th power,) and any valves, elbows, etc in the run of pipe. All things being equal, a smaller diameter pipe will have more resistance/head loss because a greater proportion of the water flowing through it has to 'rub against' the walls of the pipe as it flows.

You can use the head loss calculator on RC's home page to get an estimate.
