I have been reading about the maxi jet powerhead modification to create increased circulation. It sounds great, but I would like to hear from others. Anybody out there using it... tell me the good and the bad, please.

Go and search for:
Alage free sure flow 1600 maxi-jet upgrade kit
Sells for about 10.00
I have one and moves more water than you will need
Beats paying 400.00 for a vortech if your a poor man like me.

^^+1.. I have a vortech and maxijetmod and the maxijet pushes just as much water.. not controllability but an awesome deal for $50

lol i hear ya on being a broke man!!

I put one on my 1200 in my 20 gal tank. The noise and vibration was horrible. I had to use the old prop shaft with the new prop. That helped some but didn't completely fix the noise. When I plugged it in, it sucked sand from the bottom! Too damn strong in a 20. I put it back the way it was and am saving the mod for when it goes in my 125.

If using an MJ1200, you basically have to use the larger properller -- the white one. The smaller one makes noise in a 1200, but is fine on an MJ900.

I used this mod on my 27 I am sure my fish thouggtnthere was a storm on the way! Overkill on that tank but a great value for the price!!!!

I used the old mod, but they offer their own now at a reasonable price. I had some problems with the sure flow mods. but they worked okay.

I bought one a while back cant remember the brand but it sucked the mod cover did not fit tight and just came off. I later bought a Sure Flow and it works great. Flows a ton of water very strong current. I used it on a MJ900 and MJ600, they flow the same. Not controllable and can not be used on a wave maker, not a big deal for the price. My only major complaint is the start up problems. It would not like to start up sometimes and it would be really loud until it started. Other than that no issues. MJ now has the MJ Pro that comes with this for free now with the power heads. Looks like a needed improvement on the mod kits.

I used a mj 1200 in my 60 gallon, it pushed a ton of water, great flow, but it was loud on start up and kind of bucked like a bronco...a little too much for my taste, went with a seio 820, much calmer

I used the mod kit on an MJ400 in my 10g. I did not like the standard MJ because it shot a narrow fast jet of water. The mod kit does the opposite. It pushes a broad wall of water, much more like an ocean current. This created a new problem for me. The MJ400 without the mod was ineffective; whereas the MJ400 with the mod kit was way too much. In my 10g BB, it was moving LR around the bottom of the tank. the solution was very simple. Using the dremmel tool, I shaved the prop by half. I face the flow across the tank into the skimmer return flow. Now the conflicting currents more resemble the surge action on a reef then the jet stream of the straight MJ.

I am happy with the results of the modified mod kit. I could not justify a vortech on a 10g.

Just saw tonight, maxi jet now sells a Pro version of their own, includes a propeller and grille.

I could not justify a vortech on a 10g.

You must be fairly new to the hobby? Usually as more time goes on, it gets easy to justify almost anything on whatever size tank. All sanity goes out the window :).

I originally had an mj1200 on my 40 gallon breeder. It moves a lot of water but it is a STREAMLINE. On a 3 foot tank it blew sand everywhere. I switched it out for a vortech and never looked back. I won't compare the mj mod to a vortech, they aren't apples to apples.

I will say though that in the end I have saved money going with a vortech. I have used it on a 40 gallon, 24g nano cube and now my 7.5g cube. I tried three other pumps on my current tank and the vortech was the only one that worked for me. No matter what mj mod I got to start, it couldn't be used again in my situation. Now when I upgrade to a larger tank the vortech will go with me again. Saving me money and saving me from the wife...lol

I wish people could get past comparing all pumps against each other. A koralia isn't a tunze and a tunze isn't a vortech. Yes they all move water but they do it differently.
