I was thinking of getting the maxi1200. Its $29.99 at my LFS. Can I do better? Does anyone have anyexperience with this model?

Its always nice to support your LFS though. If the difference in price after shipping is only a few bucks, you might as well get it from your LFS. I've seen many go out of business. Besides, if you develop a good relationship with them, they may begin to give you the "insider's" price. As for the pump, very reliable, I have had them for years. They run for a long time if you treat them right. THe suction cups kind of suck on them, and not in the good way they were intended to. I find more success just hanging them over the side of the tank and using the power chord to stabilize them. They wont sink, they arent heavy enough. THe chord will just hold them up.

Unless you're going to put the MJ1200 in a nano sized tank, I'd strongly consider doing some sort of mod to it. As a stand alone powerhead it has pretty low flow. At least trim down the nozzle to get a more dispersed flow.
The Sure-Grip magnetic powerhead holders are the bomb! The suction cups that come with those things won't hold up once the glass starts to get coraline growing on it, and once that thing falls you'll end up with quite a sand storm.

In a 30 gallon, 1 or 2 would be fine. I imagine since your just entering the hobby that you wont be trying to care for anything that requires a ton of flow. If you decide to care for SPS corals, then you might want to think about something else, but for general purposes, in a small tank, those things can work wonders if used properly. J. Monty does make an interesting point about filing the tip down. I know that there are mods out there that will disperse the flow and essentially make them more effective. But like I said, you will be ok in a 30 gallon with a few of these plus your return.
