maxima placement

I bought a maxima clam over the weekend that's about 2 inches long. I placed it on the rocks in the middle of my tank on what I thought was a secure surface and twice now he's scooted off the rock and onto the sand bed. Should I just leave it in the sand? It looks perfectly happy there. I have 2 250 watt MH and 4 56 watt T-5's about 30 inches above the sand bed.

Hey schmidt,

I have read they perfer being on rockwork. I have mine towards the top of my tank under 150's. I would assume that mid to high should be fine with your 250's...

Do you feed any phyto? Reason I ask, I have read recently(since I just recently aquired one) that any maxima clam under 3'' should be fed with phyto. When they are smaller, they tend to filter feed more than relying on photosynthesis.... Just a FYI, passing on information! :)

I wouldnt direct feed the clam that small you feed it phyto but would not directly feed it though. I would put it on a rock but like i said they like to move around alot when first getting one till its happy. You can put a rock under it on the sand let it settle down and then move the rock up. Remember not to move it to much you might stress it out more then anything.

Ok, I'll put him back on the rocks. Thanks for the advice!

I haven't been feed him directly. I read that as long as you feed the fish in your tank the clam will have enough to feed on. Do you still think I should feed it phyto? If so, I'll give it a try. I really want this little guy to make it!

You can feed the tank phyto or feed near him i just wouldnt put the feeding devise up to the clam and blow the phyto at him you might block his gills. Feed phyto if you want, nice to see your in palmyra i used to live there lol.
