Maxspect Gyre XF130 hands-on (with power consumption, flow)

i have also had all of them. I will say MP's are great but from what i have seen and heard about the flow of the gyre they are worth a shot right now. it appears they will only get better. If you are not having to buy them right this minute you might want to wait for the advnced controller. I am hoping the release it within a month. If not i may just go ahead and buy the xf150. I am going to go with 2 xf150, one on each side. My LSF has a 155gal tank set up like this and they have told me its the best powerhead they have ever used and with 2 on the tank pretty much no dead spots... will also allow me to not run them at a higher % since i will go with 2. just me though :)

I would actually do like I do and have them alternate every few hours. Until they have the 'advanced' controller that can control multiple, timers or relays are best instead of trying to use alternating gyre mode, as you'd have to wait several hours until one switches over, then plug in the other one to have it go forward while the other is in reverse. If they ever lose power, you'll have to do that again, which is no fun :)

i saw a BRS video on setting 2 up like this. I do think that is what i am going to do. I wont have my new tank until end of May so i still have a few weeks before i need to purchase them. I was hoping in that time the new controller would be out. If it does great i will get it, if not i will just buy them and set it up like this.

Yeah, from what I understand from Coralvue, it's still gonna be a while before the controller surfaces. I'll ping Chris Conti, though, and see if there are any beans they'll let me spill :D

EDIT: Actually, that reminds me, I was planning on doing a little comparison video to compare the noise levels of the old mount versus the new. Everyone always says it's night and day but some people still want to hear the difference first :)

Anything you can get out of them would be great! Also any video you can show will only help and i would love to see!

Also wanted to put out there... my LFS has been running the gyre since december and has said they have only cleaned it maybe 2 times and had zero issues with it. I know some people have said they have had issues but i think those could just be one-offs

I've never personally had to clean mine. Then again, my tank doesn't grow coralline at all and film algae doesn't bother pumps so I guess I haven't had a reason to. :)

Maybe I can save you the work?

Here is my video comparison of the noise level with old vs. new mounts on a Gyre 150:

Would this work well in a nano tank? 12"x12"x12" internal display dimensions? I was thinking one of each impellers and switching mode around 3/10?

I don't know how that would end up. Probably not great. Even running a single propeller and on the lowest speed might be too much. Can always give it a shot, but I think that even the 130 is just a bit too much for that size.

Well I guess back to the drawing board on flow devices. Thanks for the input though. I figured I'd be close to an MP10 which lots of people use maybe not though. Maxspect should look into a nano gyre. huge market.

Has anyone actually tried swapping the paddles so that you could use the alternating gyre setting?

I wonder how bad the half and half would affect the flow.

So I got a set of the 'reinforced' Gyre 130 paddles today. At first I thought something was wrong, flow was quite a bit less, then I realized I installed them backwards. Whoops.

Good news is that in addition to being significantly stronger than the old paddles, flow also has increased by quite a bit. I was running the 130 on my 40g tank at 100% constant speed, I like corals like I like my women, all bent over. ;) With the new paddles, I had to reduce the pump to 60% speed to get it to the same output as the old paddles had at 100%. Flow in reverse also sees a pretty significant increase, but IMHO it still isn't enough to really make it enough for me to use reverse. :P

Power consumption at 100% has increase in forward from 26.1 watts to 28.7 watts, and in reverse from 16.1 watts to 16.4 watts.

do you know if new gyre will come with these standard?? can't decide if I should pull the trigger now on the 130 or wait for them to come with the new blades

I honestly don't know. I've emailed Chris Conti of Coralvue to see what he says on it.

thanks! he kinda ignored my question in another thread...hope it wasn't on purpose =P. from business stand point, I can understand why they would not want people to know so they can sell the remaining stock first.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to share my experience with the Gyre. I purchased the newest model with the better controller and was very pleased with the power the 230 puts out however, it was too strong for my 30 gallon rimless tank even on the lowest setting with only 1 side of the pump installed it was stressing my corals and causing them to retract their polyps. I ended up going back to 2 mp10s in anti sync mode at 40%. I then moved the Gyre to my 160 gallon and removed the 2 mp40s and couldn't be happier. I think this pump is better suited for 50g and above anything less will case issues with sand storms and LPS corals.

That's interesting. Got any pics of your setup? I'm currently running an XF150 with the upgraded props on my 36 gallon cube. When running horizontally I have to run it on the second setting to avoid my LPS (for now a hammer and a Duncan) to closing up, and fifth setting or lower when running vertically. I would imagine that the 130 would allow for better control since it is more adjustable on the lower end of power.

When ya gonna crank that sucker up to 11 and do a 'Will It Blend' video? :D
