Maxspect LED owners!!!

Sounds about right. Funny thing is I'm not hearing results that cover the extra cost for cree.
I've been using cheap 1w leds( 119 of them) for months now and have sps growth. If my water conditions where more stable it would be good growth as I have seen from others with the same light.
I have played with two 160w maxspects that were some of the first and had faults. The light they give off seems better than my current fixture.
The long of the short is that I think the semi leds will do the job just fine unless you are talking about pushing the limits with a very deep tank.

So I am looking at getting a Elos mini 20 and was really wanting to to go with a nice LED light..

Plans are to keep softies and SPS and a clam or two... Would you go G2 110w or 160w?

Hey Adam T,

I saw that too, I was think about getting the Key LED but so far i have found no info on it except for the youtube video that they have. Here is another site that i found that sell all different type of LED too. www.aquashoponline.com

I too saw the Key Leds and was thinking the same thing... You dont get all the fancy controls but it costs about 1/2 as much... But I dont see anyone with one on the forum...

Is it due to the US patents why we can't buy these from a local dealer?

Good luck with that and the dumb patent law. Thanks Clinton. 20yrs=20yrs.

Better pricing?
Are you retarded? How could a reseller give a better price?

Easy, just buy a lot of units and you get a nice discount. Add to that a cheap shipping that takes a month and you're set

My apologies. That seemed less insulting when I first wrote it.

I would think it very unusual for a reseller to import a container full of these lights and then pass that discount on directly. There will also be import duties added to the cost plus the cost of selling them and dealing with returns etc.
It's more likely that a local reseller will operate just like any other. You get a slight discount on the price offered elsewhere and then end up with limited customer support.
I have been burned before and avoided the local guys trying to resell the units in Australia. Buyer beware.

Overseas Products

Overseas Products

Most of the really good products in the hobby come from overseas and they seem to handle warrenty and support just fine. ie. eheim and bubbleking.. etc I'm sure it will all work out when the product is available locally. If you are having problems in Aust. then you are probably not dealing with a legit reseller/ distributor , hope that helps you out in the future.

Agreed. An authorised agent will be able to offer warranty support and the like. You will not get a greatly reduced cost. You will also not be able to find one due to the patents in place in the US.
Contact Maxspect and ask them how many authorised agents they have. I did.

I agree but the 160w fixture only has 14 Semi whites that are replaced with the XP-Gs and they are only using Bin 3 from what I understand. That's an additional $15.72 per XP-G (bin 3).

That's not what I read. The Cree version has 26 3W XPG white, 6 3W semiled blue, 4 3W violet and 4 15W semiled blue. So instead of using the 30W led to provide the white spectrum, they use the 3W cree. The white:blue ratio watt for watt is 1:1 vs 2.4:1 of the non-cree version. The thinking behind it is that the cree white is more "yellow" than the semiled white so it needs more blue to neutralize it. But when you substitute white with blue, you lose the overall intensity of the fixture. Now the question becomes how about using 4 15W white to replace the 30W white in the original G2 160W like someone else had done. How do these two configuration compares?

I'm thinking about purchasing the G2 160w for my 34G Solana 20x20x20. I'd prefer not to hang the unit, are any problems going to result from putting the fixture directly on top of the tank with the supports provided?? I was sure if it's too close to the water, or if tank evaporation will cause harm. Any input is appreciated.

You will be fine. A lot of people, probably most people, are using the provided tank mounts/supports. I'm having a custom 20"x20"x18" low-iron glass tank made and I will be hanging my G2-160, because I want to be able to look at my tank from the top down better than if I used the supports. I'm having a cool new overflow box (a new design that a local tank maker thought of in collaboration with glassoverflows) with the return bulkhead built inside of the bottom of the overflow box, which will spread out the flow of the water as well as significantly cut-down on surface agitation, making top-down viewing great. I'm either the first or second person to have this put on my tank, hopefully it works as good as it looks and sounds, because when I saw it and talked about it with the tank maker, who actually thought of this design, I thought it was a simple and great idea. It was one of those ideas that was so simple that I couldn't believe that I, or anybody for that matter, didn't think of it sooner. Sorry, I got a little off track, I'm just so excited to get my new tank, which should be done in about 2 weeks, but you will be fine using the supplied tank mounts.

Some of you have had your fixtures over your tanks for a few months now. How do your corals look?
Corals are doing absolutely awesome with the Maxspect fixture!

My ELOS mini is 17x17x16 (approx) and I have my G2-160w suspended via conduit (bent at 90 deg). The mounting brackets that come with the light fixture don't allow for much room between the water and the bottom of the fixture, you will get SOME clearance, but it's not a lot. Also, anything clamped onto the glass makes me weary. No matter how careful you are, you never know when there might be that one "chance" that you accidently hit it. I would highly suggest mounting the light via the hanging kit that comes with the fixture, or to just do something like a DIY light tree. With my conduit light tree example, I now have ~8 inches between the water line and the bottom of the fixture. Way more than enough for me to do whatever I need to do when maintaining the tank.

Just got my Maxspect in the mail last night. How long did it take your corals to adjust to the new light?

My clam is like "***?" right now.

I used mesh screen and acclimated over a two week period (slowly removing the mesh).

My corals looked p*ssed off for 2-3 days but adjusted within a week or so (or so it seemed) :)
