Maxspect LED owners!!!

Guess I should have posted this with my last post as I have had two pm's asking about thermal paste :)

General thermal paste will work fine, however if you want the good stuff, I recommend arctic silver 5. Outstanding stuff for cpu's, and equally outstanding on leds. Remember a very small dab goes a very long ways.

Would you recommend we take apart our fixtures and spread some more thermal paste?

question for those more techy then me. i just hooked up two 230 g2 units in my canopy. identical installation. one is running 30 degree celcius or 86 and the other is 40 degrees celcius or 100 degrees. any thoughts? thanks i advance. half hour later, now they are at 37 and 46.

Are all leds lit on both & both fans running?

I did not. If I have an led failure, I may consider it and then watch to see if I have another failure.

I bought mine on march 12 and am still waiting for it...they emailed me that it shipped friday so i'm hoping begining of next week...all you guys ordered 'em up didn't you?!

It is strange to see such a difference in temp from two identical units. What is your room temp? Are they both inside the canopy and with all lights on? If they are inside a canopy you need to somehow vent the heat outside the canopy. Mine goes up to about 40C when all lights are on and I have two pc fans pulling warm air out.

I had the same thing. So I ran the lights with my canopy open and then they ran about the same temp. Finally I move my canopy fans around a little and that solved my problem. Turned out that it was just a hot spot in my canopy.

Awesome thread! I just got a 140G (60x30x18) tank that I'm looking at different was lighting. I upgraded from a 54G CBF which had a 250W MH/PC combo light.

I can see a pair of these in my future. I'm thinking of getting 2 of the 160Ws since the 250W MH looks really good (on the the one side it's on.)

ULN or ULNS, is just a way a person runs his / her reef. Stands for ultra low nutrient system. Very long explanation with multiple ways to do it so best to research it :)

I'm building a brand new 125 gallon, and I'm trying to pick lighting. The LEDs look like a sweet alternative to the 3, 250 watt MHs I was planning on using, for control, electrical use, and heat issues.

My question is, how many of these would I need for a 6 foot tank? I was thinking 3 G2-160's, but I wanted to make sure they were going to do the trick.

You have the answer, I would go with 3-160 models if you want to keep sps. or the 110's if you want lps & sps up at the top.

Since I work with a lot of leds as one of my jobs, I am looking into having custom 30W led units built that are actually in the right color range that would be visually desirable for us all. I am requesting a small qty to be built "12 total" so not sure if they will build them for me in that qty, however I order so many leds, they should. Will keep you guys updated on my findings.

Garage, what will be the color range of your custom 30W LEDs, 20K? What color temp do you think the Maxspect 30W is? Factory spec claimed to be in 16-17k. Looking forward to your update.

Maxspect is smoking some wacky weed if they thing the stock 30w's are in that temp range, they are more like 6500K at best on my g2 units. LED color rating is strange, I have units in the 12K range that I stock which are a white / purple / blue color visually stunning. Looking to replicate something similar to that which would be more like a 20K halide such as an xm, ushio & so on.

I would be totally down for these as well :)

Interesting that these don't seem to be commercially available at all.. I looked at lck-led.com, cutter electronics, and a few other places and it seems that 30W LED's are only made in pure white. You'd think there would be a market for these in different color temps.

In the stock format, no. Just needs thermal paste. Waiting for confirmation on body style of the ones I am looking to have produced.

Is there any soldering involved in swapping out the 30's?

The picture here shows the 30W LED in my G2 230W. Looks like you just unplug the clips and remove the four screws. I found several 30W LEDs on Ebay but they have different bases and I am not sure their color temp either.
