Maxspect LED owners!!!

right im not super happy about this light, it arrived from interstate and when i recieved it it wouldnt even work, 3 wires had snapped off the plug inside the controller, and it looks like the blue leds are burnt. they all work fine and emmit a strong blue light but im thinking abut replacing them anyway. my question is... do i need to use the maxspect blue leds again or can i just replace them with 3w cree ones?

Are you unhappy with the light or the fact that the shipping company damaged it? Which Maxspect model do you have? I don't understand the blue LEDs looking burnt but still work, can you share a photo?

I had my Maxspect G2 230W for almost 3 yrs. A few months back someone here in the forum suggested to look for burnt LEDs if the unit has been used for more than 2 yrs. Sure enough when I looked at the LEDs, almost all of the blue had signs of burnt out but they still emitted light but much dimmer than when they were new. I ended up replacing all of the blue. They white seemed to be okay.

You can see in this picture the burnt out blue on the left and in the middle. The LED on right is a white one

exactly like the above leds, thanks simon. its a g1 160w, so am aware that its 3 years old, but just expected a longer lifespan out of the leds. i have even emailed maxspect australia, and havent recieved a reply. white ones are fine just the blues.

I just ordered some Cree xpg white on eBay for $2.50 each. I plan to replace the white ones also as soon as I get them.

What is the real issue , should we find out why they burn out rather than change them out every two years?

I think most of us who are early adopter of Maxspect LED knew the Semileds that were used in the unit will not last more than 3 years and planned on replacing them anyway with better LEDs like CREE. For some reasons the blue Semileds seemed to deteriorate much sooner than the white. The controller and other electronics of my G2 230W are still working well after 3 years so I guess I can't complain too much about the unit. Replacing the LEDs was easy and pretty straight forward and I hope it will last another 3-5 yrs:beer:

LED technology comes a long way. The new models of Maxspect are using much better LEDs and I don't think people will have this problem that we have with G1 and G2 versions.

Any G2 owners using lens add ons or just going with it stock? Want to push a bit more with my 93G cube (24" deep).

Same boat here with the blue leds-what's the consensus been on replacement color spectrums (very open ended question there).

Great fixtures otherwise.

Hey all, i have a g1 110w and right now it has a more whiteish 10k look, and im wanting it more blue to bring the colors of my sps out more. What do you all recommend? Was looking at the led buld replacements and the op lens kit. Have no idea where to go from here. Cree royal? Red? Green? Where do i place these if i add other colors?

Thanks in advance,

Casey

I am planning to replace the original white LEDs with CREE XPG in a couple days. I will post some pics of what I will do.

I replaced most of my LEDs when I had the unit new to Crees but will switch out the semis as thy blow. The job is pretty straight forward.

OK, all of you Maxspect owners. I'm thinking two 27" 16k 160watt Razor units over my frag tank. My tank dimensions are 60"x18"x14". The canopy is an open top and the Razors will sit directly on top of this 5" above the water. So I want some opinions if two 27" units would be perfect for this set up. Thanks in advance, here are a couple pics of the tank.

Is this your frag tank or display tank? I think two 27" Razor will be perfect for this tank! Are those MP40Wes? If they are, you will have to dial them way back not to have a sand storm in your tank. MP10W will be perfect for a 14" deep tank.

I'm going to be using this as my frag tank. I'm using a starboard bottom so blowing sand won't be an issue. Yes, they are MP40's, but I have since sold them and will be using different pumps. Thanks for the response.

I just got a 160 Watt Razor 10000K today.

It has a slightly stronger light than my 3 year old G2 160W. The difference is just slight because the tank top mount of the razor puts it much higher than the G2.

With everything on 100% the razor looks much bluer than the G2 ever was.

My only complaint is the shimmer. The shimmer of the G2 can only be compared with MH. The shimmer of the Razor looks artificial because you can clearly see the effects of the different colors. Love the shimmer of the 30 watt leds on the G2.

I have never seen led fixtures by other brands, but I suspect it must look worse than the Razor, because they have more variety of colors.

But take what I say with a pinch of salt, I am probably much more demanding with the looks of light than the average customer, because I deal with the aesthetic part of light in my job.

I must point out the astonishing warmth of the white channel. I had already planned the 6 point schedule to have the white and blue channels ramping up and down at different speeds, but I am going to change it, so that I can see the 100% white, 0% blue at some point during the day.

The 0% white and 100% blue looks more natural in the razor than on the G2.

Very, very happy with the razor and very glad I didn't go with the 16000K.
