Maxspect LED owners!!!

Exact quote from site
"Suitable for Maxspect LED Lighting
For LED after 1 Year is better to replacement chips"

I was ready to pull the trigger till I saw this.

No one has disputed what the site says, however common sense and a look at the led manufacturers spec sheet will tell you the fact vs. What a company wants to sell you. Most companies that produce motor oil say you HAVE to change your oil every 3K miles. Or they sell you a "high mileage" motor oil at an increased price. Well the facts have been around forever that a standard change should be around 5K or even longer depending on manufacturer / engine even with standard oil.

For example. Fish stores & retailers claim mh bulbs need to be changed every 6 months *LOL* I usually changed mine every 1.5+ years and that was usually because I wanted to try a different unit. I would then give bulbs away and some would claim they used them for a long while after that as well. Or the bulb would crap out in the first few months, went through my share of that.

I agree, they are just pushing the replacement bulbs, although only time will tell how long an LED will last in the aquarium environment.

Here's some pics of the G2-230 over my tank. I'm still working on the tank. I don't have my plumbing or sump setup. I'm still cycling my rocks. Just wanted to show some picks of the 230 over a tank.

How bigs your tank?

Also, any one from the UK on here looking at getting one of these?

Not sure if Im going to get 1 / 2 / 3 of these - tank is 48" long? May go DIY

You're right - I had forgotten about the "Free upgraded shipping" on the website.

I wonder if they just forgot to update their shipping confirmation email?

Yes my unit was shipped 4 days UPS.

I have a 120g Acan dominated tank that is 48'' x 28'' x 19''. Would 2 x G2 160 cover well.?? Also I'm looking for a 20,000k- 24,000k look and noticed most people with that fixture run the 30w whites for only a few hours because it looks 10,000k with the 30w on. Any word on a new 30w with more blue??

The first two pics I believe were both the blue and whites 3w. And the last two were all the lights. I'm not for sure. I had just hung the lights and was not paying to much attention to which lights I had on. I will try and get some better pics tomorrow with exactly which lights are on. As far as the color of the lights I really like them. With just the 3w blues on, the tank is really blue almost purple, and it really makes like reds and orange colors pop out. Just the 3w whites on, it seems like like a early morning light its not too bright. My tank dimensions are 36 x 18 x 24. And I think the 30w lights make a big difference because my tank is 24" deep. This is my first tank setup, so I could not give a good review compared to other lights. But with all the lights on It looks like the light penetrates to the bottom very well.
I will try and get some more pics tomorrow. To try and show the different light modes better.
I know when I was trying to decide on a light, I couldn't find a lot of pictures of this unit on my size tank.

well recieved my g2 170w and kicking self for not getting the 230w version, color is around a 18k overall definately doesnt light my whole tank 3x2x22" really thinking of putting my 8 bulb t5 back on. the positive built decent, everything works do like the color, does light tank if i raise it up then isnt s bright, hate to have to add more some strips because purpose was to lower electric, thnking of getting optics for the whites though, now for penitration which optics would be best, will raise it some then for a little more coveage

Here's a few pics of the my 57g. 36x18x24 tank with the maxspect g2-230w. I turned off the flash on my camera to give a little better idea of how the light looks over my tank.

Nice pictures, Wec!

BTW, did you have any problem with your G2 230W tripping the GFCI? I came home from work yesterday and my tank was dark. The GFCI that the Maxspect was plugged in was tripped. I reset the outlet and turned on the light and it tripped again. It did that several times. I ended up plugging the light into a non-GFCI outlet. My light has been plugged into the GFCI outlet for over a month and didn't have any problem until now. Do others have similar experience?

My G2 160W tripped my GFCI from day one. Turning on/off any of the individual LED banks would trip my GFCI. I tried a different cable and a different GFCI and it didn't make a difference. I eventually gavfe up and plugged it into a non GFCI. Hopefully the light won't fall into the tank while I am working in it :worried:

My 230 has not tripped my gfi. I got a gfi with a power strip from HD. And it hasn't tripped once. Is a gfi and a gfci different?

(sorry for the poor quality photo, taken from my Palm Pre)

I just received my Maxspect G2-160W (Ordered 4/15, notified they shipped on 4/28 - delivered on 4/30!) Still waiting on the extra LEDS that were ordered.

In the photo, the G2-160W is on a small Frag tank next to two AI units (70W ea.) are running 100% Blue and 75% white. The Maxspect (G2-160W) is at 100% on all LEDS. At 6", the G2 is putting out about 840 PAR. At 12" (water surface) it measures 350 PAR.

I posted this earlier with a link to another RC thread that includes PAR measurement comparisons to the AIs, and MH/T5s but perhaps it is not permitted as it seems to have been deleted. Anyone interested in the PAR results, can find them with a simple search.

Timer Inop (or user error)

Timer Inop (or user error)

I can't seem to get the timer to work. I've set the clock and confirmed the on/off times for each light group but the timer doesn't function, The lights manully turn on/off fine.

I've read through the directions several times - Is there something that I'm missing or that needs to be done to activate the timer?

Thanks for the help!

I've had a G2 170W running for about 2 months. Today the the temp alert started alarming , the temp reading would not stay steady kept flashing from low 30's to hi 40's, then it started turning the lights on and off. I've never seen the temp above 24 before. The fans are running. The little sponge filter on the driver or ballast was dirty, so I cleaned it but it continued doing it. Any ideas what it might be or how to remidy?

First off, good photos! Gotta love the color of the maxspect unit.

Second, you are using it sorta wrong :) The maxspect unit is a non optic system so you do not need to hang it up way high to avoid hot spots & so forth. In general, many of us run our units very close to the waters surface, myself running both g2 160w units at 3" above the waters surface. Or just keep it as high as you want as long as the par is what you are looking for. Just a thought :)

My only thought is that the units are on a 24 hour period, for example, 5pm is 17:00 Maybe you are trying to get them to turn off in the am instead of pm?

Thanks Garage - The G2-160 is temporarily set at 12" so it would be the same as the AI's allowing me to take comparable PAR measurements. Thereafter, I'll lower them based on PAR and coverage area - probably 4"-6" with such a shallow tank.

I confirmed the clock was set correctly and set the timers to;

Blues - 7:00-23:00
3W Whites - 8:00-20:00
30W Whites - 11:00-14:00

Still nothing, I've re-entered the settings several times and unplugged the unit to no avail. I was hoping there was some option to turn on the timers that I might have missed.

I was hoping this was a user-error problem, but I'm beginning to wonder if the unit if defective :(
