Maxspect LED owners!!!

Replaced the failed 30w LED in the unit, and those are working again. Found a dead blue and dead violet 3w though at the same time.

But I think I also found the root cause of ALL the problems I've been having since day 1. Bad cable between the control module and the LED module. It's shorting internally, and causing all sorts of issues. Move the cable around, and problems follow the cable. Unfortunately, the cable has also gotten worse, and is forcing an entire unit to shut down on me now. But problems can be fixed once you find them.

I also can't say enough good stuff about Howard at Maxspect. He's been utterly invaluable through this whole escapade. That guy really knows good customer service, no doubt about it.

i am in the process of ordering some new cree's for my two 170. I plan to swap out maybe 8 whites to royal blues for each fixture.

Hi scuzy, so have you change your led ? Do you see a difference with the cree's or same has similed ? I'm thinking to change some led on my 170. Thanks

Hiya guys, I've been thinking for a while it would be nice to add dimming to the g2 units and since it seems maxspect are never going to do it I wondered if anyone has managed to diy such a controller?

Here is a PAR reading for the G2 170w with reflector and 60d honeycombs lens. I didn't found any PAR reading for the 170w so maybe it will help someone... Big improvement from the stock 170w... more than double the PAR.

I have the stock G2-160W over my tank for the past couple of years. Where would i find reflectors kits/lenses for my setup? Also looking to possibly switch out some of the LEDs.

Hi All,

I have a Maxspect G2170W (semiled chips) with no lense and optics, Would i be able to upgrade the led chips to cree xp-g and cree xp-e with optics (60 and 80 degrees) from rapid led?

Has anyone done this before?

Ignore the above post, went thru some of the pages and found a lot of people have done this modification.

how much current is use to drive the semileds?

I buy them from the LFS I bought the fixture from - reefsolution. However, I was wandering if I could use the LEDs from RapidLed. They are cheaper, CREE and even come with a connector that looks similar to maxspect's. Did anyone try? Will it work? I'm not sure if the screw openings on maxspect will fit the star shape.

Anyone know where to order online the optics in the U.S.? I already have the optics kit, but just want a few additional 60 deg lens.

Aquarium Specialty wants a min of $12 for ground shipping, which may be more expensive than a handful of optics (really they're featherlight, they could be mailed in an envelope for a buck or so).

i just got in some rapidled solderless LEDs and they DO NOT fit the maxspect g2 units.

the connectors are bigger than the maxspect ones.

Good to know. I wonder if Jameco sells the rights ones or maybe an adapter. They have a ton of small electrical parts

Hi all,

After less than 2 years use i have found that all my 3w blue semi-leds in my G2160w have varying degrees of black marking in the middle of the led. I assume this means they are partially burnt out. All 3w cool whites look normal on the other hand. Has anyone any experience with this?

If they are burnt out it means replacing all 14 chips, which will cost cost about $110. I have written to Eric and am awaiting his response.

Also, has anyone found 20K 30w replacement leds?

Thanks in advance,

Cale

Just another update. I received a response from Eric at Fish-Street saying that they will not cover the 3w blue leds under warranty because they are consumables. My issue here is that only the 3w blues have burnt out and that this indicates a problem in manufacturing/implementation of solely the semi-led blue 3w chips and in addition is not consistent with the replacement specifications at the time of purchase (misleading information). Does anyone have any advice?
