Maxspect Razor

So here are some pics of beat up corals that are coming back to life under this light...The tips on this tricolour are actually more purple..

Looking good Mike. Ive got 2 27" units on order with MD, just been waiting for them to get their order from CoralVue. Question, what is the coral in your pic that has the little green tips?

How big is your tank?
I am hoping the coral is a purple bonsai. Tricolour for sure anyway. Will see how it goes. Hopefully someone will chime in and let us know!
 
Only one light. light is a foot off the water surface. LR is halfway up in the aquarium. Some shadows are present but coverage is very good. Digitatas on the edge of the LR are growing. They are getting the least amount of light.

Great thread! I have a new 36x18x24 I am setting up and seriously contemplating this 27 inch 160 watt Razor fixture. How long have you been running yours Mike? Are you up to 100% yet for intensity? My mouth is wattering for this fixture! If I go with one of these vs. 2 250 watt metal halides it will really save me alot! I will be all SPS with a few LPS at the very bottom.

I've only been running mine about three weeks. For the short period of time I have had this running the results so far have been very good! Really happy with it. Beats my 400 halide for sure. Very small and sleek fixture. Wire and power box very minimal. And 160 watts to boot!
A for intensity, I had it running on one of the programs at 100% for a couple of hours. I have since brought it down for fear of blasting the corals with too much light. I am slowly ramping it back up.

Wow! So your not running at full intensity. Man, that's saving you big $$$$$$$$$ in your electric bill! I had two 400 watt Radium over a 120 years ago. It beat the "you know what" out of my electric bill.......lol.
You know, out of all the other fixtures I have contemplated with LED this one just feels right!
It's affordable, very affordable!
PAR is BIG!!!!!

One of things I really like about this fixture, and that sold me on it, is the leds they chose to use. You are able to get a nice spectrum that red and green leds produce.......without having to use a red or green led.

Not 100% true. I did a test on my DIY Cree XT-E fixture with Warm Whites and Neutral Whites, and my chinese fixture with Bridgelux Warm Whites and Neutral Whites. I thought the same myself... that the warm whites would provide the visual benefit and spectrum benefit.... they do, but not as much in the visuals as separate red and green leds.

I have a color string channel on my Cree XT-E fixture with red, violet, and cyan. When it is off, the tank looks good. When it is on, there is extra florescence and color (especially in my zoas) that the NW/WW alone couldn't provide.

The Razor is probably the only big name fixture I would buy right now. They actually use a good mix of leds, and run them at a current they should be run at. My DIY fixture was based off it, with the addition of red/cyan.
 
Wait a minute, I thought they have red leds in them??? I feel this fixture puts out the PAR needed. I would not have nothing to do with the Radions. They look great, but where too weak. Now of course, they come out with lenses to increase the par a bit.
Now the Pro version is coming out that will have probably 50% more PAR. When I saw them in person at reef a palooza I was not impressed at all with intensity.
I think the Maxspect Razor is a real value and I look forward to Mike's reports with great expectations.

They do not have red leds in them, but the leds that they use provide the same benefit to corals that a red led would. Bhazard has reported that they dont visually appear the same as red leds (meaning they dont look the same to our eyes) but again, corals should get the same benefit as they would from the spectrum provided by red leds.
