Mazzei Injector Protein Skimmer

I have the same 584 injector/Mag 5 combination on a DIY
setup I'm working on now, only problem I face is the head
pressure the pump is working against. The skimmer is 4"
PVC with the throat at being 48" tall. I'm trying a recirculating
loop for the Injector and will feed the skimmer with a maxi
1200. I have a Mag 9.5 on the way should be here next week
I hope this will cure my troubles if not back to the drawing
board.

I have the 1/2" Mazzei 384 injector. Mazzei told me in order for this injector to work I would need a high psi pump. So I got a Via-Aqua 4900 rated @ 1320gph. It still did not produce a the amount of bubbles needed. I don't understand if Littleprince is using a mazzei#584 with a mag5 which is at a lower gph than my pump and he's getting a good foam. This is my second injector the frist was a mazzei 684 that they recommended and I returned it for the 384 which is still not performing. And yes it's on the right way. Anyone can help me out here, where am I going wrong.

How high of a pressure did he recommend? Is your pump producing that pressure? The mazzei's can be a bit finicky at times. I would install a pressure guage before the input so that you can dial in the perfect pressure. What type of skimmer are you using it on?

He said about 1000 or more the higher the better. I have less than a foot of head press. Not sure if the pump is putting out that pressure but it seems like it does, I'll need to check on that.

What do you mean by dial in the right pressure, do you mean to back down with a gate valve?

I use a Americle Quad I skimmer I got the mazzei to upgrade the stock venturi. I think I just don't have the right pump. According to Mazzei's flow charts the 384 injector says 0.75-3.4gpm, so what would the ideal pump be for this injector?

Hey Biomass,

Could you give us more details about the problem. Bubble production problems? Height of foam problems? Integrity of bubbles? How do you have the thing set up? How high up is the skimmer versus the pump?

From the size of your pump, it seems like you should be producing flow in far excess of what the injector is rated for, however ViaAqua pumps have low head pressure and are not very reliable and pretty much suck in my opinion (sorry, had to throw that in although I will say that they are better than Rios because when they break, at least they just stop working and don't shock/melt) The 584 is 3/4" and rated at a higher PSI and flow than the 384. Since you have the 384, I'm wondering if you could put a ball valve in front of the input to tune down the flow or you might just want to purchase a mag3 or 5 to drive it since little prince seems to be having such good luck with the pump. I don't think AquaVia pumps handle pressure too well. The only one I ever bought broke down after 3 months after using it as a return to my display (thank god for trusty maxijets!). IMO I think that for any venturi injector, achieving proper pressure outweighs flow.

Peace,
John H.

Oh sorry Biomass,

I didn't read your last post very well, only a foot up... hmmmm... try a mag 3 or 5.... Intuitively, it seems like you would need less head pressure and flow than little prince who has a larger mazzei injector.

Just my two cents.

Well here is the skimmer as you can see the pump is not to deep in the tank. The problem I was having was it didn't suck enough air the amount of bubbles was weak. I figure a stronger pump forcing more water through the injector would cause a stronger vaccum but that was not happening. Maybe I'll try a mag 5 see what happens. I really do want to replace the current injector it's not that good. thanks

Hi Bio Mass,
Its hard to see details on your pic, but I was understanding the via aqua's werent really pressure rated either.

Do you have a 90 degree bend after the injector?

I actualy don't even see the Mazzei in that photo. Unless its right after the pump, but I think the Mazzei is a bit big to be hidden by that small area.

Plumbing from my Mag 5 is 1/2", I have a 1/2" ball valve wide open, than a 1/2" -> 3/4" adapter into a 90 degree pipe, I did that to restrict the flow less. Than a Union to the Mazzei, Union and into the skimmer. I than have a 15degree bend down to force the water down a bit. This piece is also a bit off center to start a bit of a swirling action.

Guys,

I am an OEM wholesaler for Mazzei and have a good understanding of the pumps and injectors. The two best injectors are the 784 Kynar which can handle up too 650 gph and the 585 1/2 or 3/4, which can handle 500 gph.

Its breaking in real well sitting on my floor =)
Tank isn't up yet!! Hehe... Did I mention I added a 5" extension thats 3" in diamter?? Yeah, to get drier foam, and I thought it needed it... Tested that out and looks like it would work great.
Maybe I should run it at someone else's place to see how it would work.

i would try to find a local to run it in for a while or are you curing LR ....use it on there.

yeah you needed drier foam by a LONG ways. hope it works great for you now

i will post pics of mine when i get it together pending all the parts get here this week or early next week

I am curing some live rock in a rubbermaid container. Theres no real room to cram the thing in though. Also theres a few inches of sand in there... Might as well get it all going at once.
I thought about taking it to a local reefer, but than thought it wouldn't be worth the hassle, since I think I should be up by about about next wed-thurs depending on how busy I get.

littleprince i would get a bigger tub and thow it on there. do you have ANY protein skimmer in the LR tub??
