MB7 and Reef Biofuel

Is anyone running MB7 in conjunction with Reef Biofuel, instead of vodka because being that im under 21 i cannot purchase vodka but do have acess to reef biofuel.

I began dosing just reef biofuel but it just doesnt seem to keep up with my nutrients they are just slightly higher than i would care for. so im going to try adding MB7

I think you should have added mb7 first

Usually people will add the MB7 in order to get their bacteria population up... I believe in the Neo Zeo directions it states you are supposed to dose MB7 for a period of 2 weeks before the BioFuel... Just be careful not to add too much BioFuel in the beginning as removing excess nutrients/nitrates/phosphates too fast can bleach out your corals...

While Bio fuel can be used as a stand alone product, that is not how it was intended to be used. It is part of the Neozeo system. MB7 is started in conjunction with the Zeo media run in a canister of some sort where the flow rate is regulated at about 100GPH. This is done for a period of time at which point then Bio Fuel is added to the mix.

I've been running the complete system for about 17 months and can tell you it works hands down.

cool well im already at a ULNS but i just want to boost it a little and also want to remove my GFO so im going to start adding the MB7 today and in 2 weeks i will resume the Reef Biofuel dosing.

I fail to see why people believe MB7 has to be dosed first (and at all) with biofuel but vodka can be dosed by itself and the needed bacteria can proliferate using the carbon source. biofuel serves the same purpose as vodka. wether MB7 helps is one thing. requiring it to work is another. If the carbon source is used to sustain the required bacteria numbers then the continual repeated dumping of MB7 cant be required to sustain bacteria numbers, at least not the ones responsible for directly binding nitrates/phosphates via consumption (may or may not help in some capacity). Hell if an abundance of carbon is required to sustain the select bacteria used to bind nitrates/phosphates then those strands of bacteria probably wont be in any significant numbers in a bottled bacteria product. I do believe MB7 may serve a purpose as a regular sludge buster bacteria used to break down organics but those have been readily available long before MB7 (in other words I dont think there is anything new or special about MB7 like people seem to think and people have always made the claims of clearer water and cleaner systems with these same type of products LONG before carbon dosing).

And yes I've used it by itself, before, during and after carbon dosing. matter of fact I had MB7 well before biofuel became available or I considered carbon dosing (or even knew brightwell was coming out with a carbon dosing system. MB7 was out well before all that. for kicks (since I have a big ole bottle) I use it alone in my biocube and with vodka in my main tank (until it runs out as I deem it not unneccesary).

As for biofuel vs vodka I've used both and comparatively if vodka is 80 proof (what I use), biofuel would be about 10 proof. After trying both (first vodka, then biofuel, then back to vodka again) of what I consider relatively extensively (been thru a full bottle of biofuel on a 30g) I believe biofuel works much slower, in my case caused NO cyno (while even a drop a day of vodka sprouts cyno), uses WAY more to accomplish the same thing and is probably safer ALL of which was probably intended (safer and lack of cyno are advantagious to you, taking longer and using more product is advantagious to brightwell). and while some have said MB7 has helped control cyno I cant say the same. perhaps it helps (I have not stopped using MB7 so perhaps I'd have tons of cyno without it but as stands I still get it. Not enough to concern me but small areas get it directly proportional to the amount or frequency of vodka dosed. not dosing vodka fixes it, dosing more MB7 does not).

As someone said earlier, the reason for dosing MB7 first is to establish or build-up an beneficial bacteria culture. Cyano is a bacteria, so as u saw with dosing vodka, it fueled the growth of cyano. I think the concept is that by dosing the MB7 u will be able to starve out the competing cyano bacteria so that when u dose a carbon source u are feeding only the beneficial bacteria and not the cyano. Just my two cents.

this is what appears to be the concensous and while i have not had issues thus far with cyano or any other nuiesence algae for that mater. but i want to aleviate the risk of having these problems arise so i am dosing MB7 for 2 weeks alone and then i will begin dosing biofuel in conjunction with the MB7.

Vinegar is another option that accomplishes the same task as vodka. Last I checked even young-ins could buy it :D

Yes I am using both products, for 2 months now and have seen a dramatic improvement in my tank. I did the mb7 first for 2 weeks then the fuel. I am now at mb7 once a week and fuel every day. Go slow with the fuel until you are sure the ank can handle it then up the dosage to the recommended amounts. One ? Does anyone just use carbon instead of the zeo?
