This is going to be a build from start to finish of my daughters Nuvo 16. I currently have 3 reef tanks already, 100G, and two 55G, all 3 in walls. She has been hounding me about wanting her own tank though so she could keep her own coral and learn the hobby. Now while Nano's are less forgiving she will have me to help her maintain it but, it is going to be mostly up to her to maintain this tank. She wants to be a MB ever since she was 7 and she is 10 1/2 now and I mean really serious about being an MB. She has her plan all laid out and it's really impressive for a kid her age. She has just about every coral memorized and knows everything about them and 9 out of 10 times shes right not to mention her extensive knowledge of marine life in general. I go to her before I go to Google most of the time...LoL So to reward her and teach her and keep her motivated we are setting up this tank as she is familiar with most of it since she helps me on the other 3 tanks.
Now this tank wasn't going to be anything big and my wife said don't spend a lot on it and I hadn't planned on it but, I kinda can't help it and if we are going to do you can't do it without doing it big. So I will be helping her build out the equipment and she will be handling the the details on the marine life through this thread.
First learning experience number one. She had to have that crap live sand from Petco. I warned her and begged her not to go that route she would be sorry but, I couldn't talk her out of it and after all it is a learning experience. So after three days of it mucking up the water and the MP10 blowing it around like a dust storm and never settling she came to me and said I hate this junk. I am draining the tank. So that is where the tank is now with the pictures above. I just have tap water in there right now with nothing but filter floss to try to catch the rest of what might be lingering. That is only temporary. I have a RO/DI unit feeding 2 55G drums for premix for my other tanks we will fill it from once we get all the junk out and get ready to set it up.
Here is what it has now and/or has been ordered.
Lighting: BeamsWork Quad Reef Bright LED Light, 3 watt LEDs, 24x 10,000K LED, 8x Actinic 460nm LED. Since this light isn't very efficient sitting how it is resting on the tank and we both don't like or want to hang it we're have a AI Nano on the way.
Media baskets: InTank media baskets and fuge with InTank fuge light
Vortech MP10 replaced 2 Hydor Nano 240s
Hydor 100W heater in sump.
Cobalt 1200 return pump
Substrate Tropic Eden Reef Flakes mixed with Aragasnow
20# of live rock
I think that is about it at the moment. Not planning on a skimmer as will be doing weekly water changes so don't think it is needed at the moment.
Will update as things progress.
