MD refractometer wont cal/read correctly

My MD brand refractometer doesn't seem to read correctly. I consistently get higher readings. I've calibrated it to zero per instructions, but when compared to 3 other test methods, hydrometer, floating hydrometer, and LFS refractometer, it's still high, water is 10.23, meter reads 10.27. Am I doing something wrong or could the meter be bad? Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for your post, It is very rare that the refractometers are bad, you may need to check on what type of water you are using to calibrate the refractometer before you test.
We recommend using Reverse Osmosis water ( R.O Water) also make sure the lens area is free and clear or any debris this includes the flip top lid.

I hope these tips are helpful, if you continue having trouble with your refractometer, please contact our Customer Services Center at 714.385.0080.

A lot of people on RC are now using the Pinpoint 53ms calibration fluid to calibrate their refractometers. I just purchased my solution from Marine Depot.

Marine Depot, do you concur that this is a good idea?

Hello,

Thanks for your post, I can't really concur that this is the way to go, we normally recommend that you use Reverse Osmosis water ( R.O Water) this is usually the best way to calibrate these devices. I have read some of the reviews on the product itself found here http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~idProduct~AM1437.html and did notice a few of our customers are using the item to calibrate their refractometers.

Hope this helps
