Medications + Bio-Pellet Reactor - Skimmer = ?

Overkill Reefer
So how do you medicate a tank (FOWLR) with meds that say turn off skimming when you are running a bio-pellet reactor?

At this point I left the skimmer on but I have the output essentially returning to the tank (it's mostly bubbles anyway). I'm thinking that this will keep the oxygen in the water at/above normal levels to counteract the oxygen robbing effects of the bacteria feeding on the carbon.

My next question is about copper and the bio-pellets. (if the meds dont help).

TIA

Wrong forum? Or hasnt anybody medicated a tank with a bio-pellet reactor?

There is no problem shutting off the skimmer with organic carbon dosing for a period of time for medication. How long were you thinking? What medication?

Is this a reef? You can't use copper in a reef tank.

Hi Randy,

No it's not a reef. It's a Fish Only with some very sick fish.

This all started with one sick fish that I added from a LFS (observation only...no QT. I know. I know) that I believe had Oodinium. At that time I treated the tank with IO Lifeguard and then life was good. Until now. It has come back with a vengeance and attacking all the fish so I am going to treat the tank rather than stressing them all out in a move. Hence my query about the bio-pellet reactor.

However, in the last two days the situation has gotten worse so I am now treating with copper.

So now the second part of my question is more relevant....Will the copper kill all the bacteria that has built up in the reactor?

Well that's good news because so far the reactor has done a great job of keeping nitrates to a lower than measurable amount and I don't want to have to do water changes during the copper treatment so that the levels remain at the proper levels for treatment.

Thanks, Randy.
