Meet Barbossa

I've been complaining to myself for months about not being able to get a picture of my mantis Barbossa because the entrance to his cave faces the back of his tank (he closed up all other gaping holes in the rock). Then last night I had a brilliant idea. I thought to myself, "why don't I turn his rock around so I can actually see my beloved pet?" And I did just that. Clearly I am a genius

Barbossa had a yellow tail damsel roommate named Jack. I'm told he was delicious.

Very nice, How long have you had him? what do you feed Barbossa?

I've had him since November. He eats a lot of frozen food; mostly scallops, small shrimp, and mysis. I always keep a few hermit crabs in his tank for him to munch on, but he usually doesn't bother hunting them. He only seems to eat them when they stumble into his cave. He likes to eat fish more than crustaceans, so I usually keep a feeder fish or molly in his tank. I think he's a spearer trapped in a smasher's body.

took ya a little while to think of turning the rock around eh? pretty sweet mantis there...what gave you the inspiration for the name?

Psyire - No, I don't know what species. I haven't been able to get an ID yet since he dashes into his cave whenever I try to take his picture.

rogerwells - For some reason my mantis reminds me of a pirate so I named him Barbossa after the bad guy in Pirates of the Caribbean. Also, I already had a damsel named Jack (Johnny Depps character in the same movie). I had a bit of a theme going I guess.

just watch out with that thermometer. I had a smithii that one day decided to fight the thermometer. He smashed the part with the lead and killed the whole tank (including himself). I tried cleaning up but he was excavating sand underneath and so he distributed all the bearings everywhere. You might wanna look into getting an electronic thermometer (the ones with a plastic probe), no problems with those.
