Meeting Frag swaps

Hey all,

I've noticed their has been very little participation in the monthly frag swaps. What's up?

I'd like to hear some feedback as to why most members are not participating?

Thanks Bob

I noticed the regular individuals who used to post aren't on this forum as much. Nor is there much traffic (postings) on northcoastreefers compared to past months. I log in here everyday but there's no much here so I tend to go to RC BAR forum or even go to BAR personal forum. People back then used to post pics of newly acquired corals, or new equipment purchased.

For the general swap, I guess individuals don't know what others have to swap?

***I have a 1 inch frag of green slimer from Tom (northcoastreefer) as DBTC if anyone wants a piece.
But you have to have a setup thats successful in growing SPS's***

Then again maybe its the economy? Maybe no ones buying anything and just watching their tank grow?

jdolores,

I don't think the number of posts on this forum has a lot to do with lack of frag swap participation at our monthly meetings.

I agree people are posting less than in the past. We have pretty good attendance at meetings. About 20 people, my concern is 5-6 of the 20 bring a frag for the swap. As a matter of fact we raised I believe the most money at the last meeting from the raffle.

I wanted others opinions, but I'm thinking people aren't participating due to the lack of quality corals in the swap. I believe this will hopefully change due to a recent effort to purchase really nice corals for the raffle.

My excuse for not participating in the frag swap is that my corals are pretty small still, except for a purple tipped acro which while a bomb example with the top 3/8-1/2" of each branch being dark purple (400w halides baby!) is neither rare nor frequently requested. Of course, if anyone would like a piece, just let me know.

I need to get off my *** and take some pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.

Bring on the nice pieces for the raffle! After last month's awesome haul (ORA Pearl Berry and Steve Elias staghorn, both of which are doing great) I'm feeling lucky.

Bob,

I think individuals who do post and communicate with others of what they have can affect the people wanting to swap. I remember when Tom and Mike posted the DBTC with the slimer alot of posts were generated with alot of communication. Maybe it was for a free coral but I for one have a frag if anyone wanted purely based on DBTC. I'm sure if someone posted some uncommon items and wanted to trade, there would be people interested. Anyways, how is the frag swap ran? I know you guys raffled items and side trades were always done from one person to another on the side. Thanks.

I started going to college again so I haven't had a whole lot of time lately. My tank is looking pretty ugly too since I have less time. Sorry for not being around as much.

Hey guys as most of you know I just lost almost all of my sps corals. Just when some of them where getting close to frag. So if anybody wants to hook a fellow reefer up i wont conplain. The goods news is the tank has come back nice after I nucked it. Reefing is full of lessons. I had one I wont ever forget!

I am now splitting my forum time between here and westernbass.com. I will be back in full force when I set my tank back up in March.

I used to be hardcore in bass fishing. My site that I liked was www.bassresource.com Mike, do you have a boat?

When we first started meeting the frag swaps were kind of an after thought. it was more about the exchange of ideas. But that being said I do enjoy the swaps for one major reason if something happens to my main colony there always somebody with a piece. Also i like to see what a coral does when it is exposed to someone else's system. Does it change colors? Start plating instead of branching? We also have the raffle and everybody knows that there is going to be cool stuff in that so if you don't bring something for the swap you still have a chance to go home with something really nice. especially when there are only a few people at the meeting.

James, stop giving away my no longer secret technique for winning nice pieces in the raffle (not many tickets sold).

Mike and jdolores - Bass fishing! Yeah buddy! Now you're talking.

Who's got a boat?

I do! It's an 18 foot Tracker with a 60 and has been the vehicle of many good times and the occasional large fish. One buddy of mine caught a 10.4lb largemouth from the back deck at 1am while we were night fishing at Lake Sonoma. He got his photo on the Lunker Page in Bassmaster mag.

What's your biggest bass? Mine is 9.22lb from Clear Lake during a club night tournament. Either of you guys ever fish tournaments?

Serious bummer about your loss Dale. My condolences.

If you'd like some purple tipped acro, let me know. I'll have additional, more interesting frags available in a couple months when they've grown a bit more.

Thanks Ken that would be awesome. I cant wait to see the tank start to look like it was before my screw up.

No I don't have a boat yet but will be looking. When are we going fishing Ken? I just started fishing about six months ago and have alot to learn. my biggest so far is a 1.5 pounder.

At first i thought "Bass fishing" there's a hobby that definitely costs less than the reef hobby. Then you had to bring up the boat. Boats are money pits no matter what size or shape. Oh well....

Largest bass for me was taken out of Lake Casitas in SoCal. It was 9.2 ounces on a 6 pound test line, I thought it was a lunker ha,ha,ha Bad thing about that lake is no alcohol allowed. I haven't been fishing in 5 years. Last time I did was in college and I took a date out fishing. She never caught a fish so a floater with a worm got her a bluegill/sunfish. Fun times :)

Row boats aren't too bad

Yes, Brad, rowboats work too!

Before I got my boat my buddy and I used to go to Sonoma in a leaky 12' fiberglass dingy. Our range was limited but we had some good times.

James, you are right that both can be expensive. And I know I've been fishing less with the price of gas. Towing to and from the lake when the closest one is an hour away can put a dent in one's wallet, as well as running the outboard. While I can't go too fast with my 60hp motor, I don't burst into tears at the gas pump (yet) compared to my buddy with a 225. Plus my Exploder is a 6 cyl v. 8, so my gas consumption isn't as bad as it could be. Of course, ain't no Prius either, but one of those couldn't tow my relatively light weight boat and trailer.

Mike, you've earned a spot on the back deck. Sonoma has been pretty stingy lately. There are some quality fish in there. My biggest Sonoma largemouth is 8.3, the very first fish I caught on my boat! My best 5 fish limit from Sonoma weighed 23lbs. My best 5 fish sack at Clear Lake is 28+ pounds (the night I got the 9).

Bass fishing at Sonoma usually improves from now until the lake muddies with winter rain.
